Cutting the cheese 🧀

I’m not a meat eater and many recipes offer cheese as a substitute... obviously cheese is high in Fat, has anyone here found a better non dairy alternative?

Personally I would be happy with cheese as an alternative, you just have to make sure you have a measured portion and include it in your calories. It is easy to eat too much, but it is a 'good' fat and very satiating. You will find that there are quite a few of us here that love our cheese 😃

As for substitutes, being a meat eater I have never really given this any consideration so has made me think this morning. You could use tofu, quorn, vegetarian sausages. If you are looking for protein this link may be of help

I have lots of egg-based meals - scrambled, fried, omelette, frittata, crustless quiche - you can create your own recipes. Have to say, though, they usually involve cheese. The greatest discovery for me in my year on the Forum is that (dietary) fat doesn't make you fat.

Hi Thecupkatech3rry

Im a vegetarian and i replaced meat with cheese for many many years!

I still eat plenty of cheese but have cut down a lot.

I agree with Lucigret in the options for meat / cheese alternatives. There is a vastly wider choice available theese days & products have cone a long way

I use smoked tofu or quorn pieces in stir frys, quorn mince for spag bols, lasagnes, or cottage pies, a lot of veggies are eating jackfruit too!

Linda macartney has a range of veggie pulled chicken and hoisin duck etc

There is also lower fat cheese options such as quark that are quite nice, some vegan cheeses take a little getting used to but sainsburys do a nice selection!

I am a cheese lover though so i calculate in into my diet 🧀😍🧀

Hi there, my husband is vegetarian so we don't eat meat at home. I'm the main cook and am really happy cooking veg but was getting really bored of my recipes. I got given the cookbook 'Ottolenghi Simple' for a present and that's full of fantastic ideas, also 'Veg Every Day' and 'Even More Veg' by Hugh Fearnley-Wittingstall - Even More Veg is totally vegan, so no cheese. I say this because neither of us like actual meat substitutes much - they taste too much like meat to him and not enough like meat to me! So I've found just getting creative with veg and pulses is easier than thinking about substitutes. I don't find cheese gets in the way of my weight-loss, though, I just smaller portions really really slowly!

I also eat very little meat, but as well as cheese, milk, yogurts and eggs, I like nuts and pulses, they’re full of fibre too 😊

But as a cheese addict I buy a little of a good cheese as an indulgence now and aging, and through the week I buy it ready sliced so i can easily portion control. Also a strong flavoured cheese helps, like a Stilton, a little goes a long way. As Lucigret says, recent research suggests full fat dairy has many beneficial nutrients so don’t worry about having them in your diet 😊
