How to make up the numbers?

Hi,

So I've read a few snacking posts and I can see that not everyone is in favour of snacking. What advice would you give to someone who struggles to reach her daily calorie minimum? How do you make up the numbers with your three meals a day or is it okay to snack in between? I'm hoping to buy some nuts and seeds to try out this week.

Nuts and seeds are good if you need/want snacks. You must decide what is right for you.

I try to eat lots of healthy fats so that I get the nutrients and can eat sufficient calories without feeling stuffed/bloated.

Have you tried looking at Daily Diary and getting an idea of what other people to-I find it a fascinating read, so much to learn.

I have yes. I'm going to try and switch a few things out from my usual foods, perhaps that might make a difference. It's just trying to figure out what will work and add up. I'll hopefully figure it out by the end of the week :)

It is a juggling game for all of us. Do you use something like MyFitnessPall to log your food? It can be really helpful to look at the numbers as you switch things around.

I am :) I only found it yesterday and it has been so helpful so far. I will just have to have a play around and see what works I think.

I plan for snacks if I know it's going to be a stressful day and I'm likely to binge. Snacking is a bit sneaky so you just have to remember to count the calories. Having fruit and good snacks on hand are good so that you can make the right choices. I don't use my snacks for higher calories. I increase by having a bit more meat or adding beans or sometimes mayonnaise. I enjoy a slice of wholegrain seeded bread as well to increase my calories if necessary. Oh and a spoon peanut butter.

At the moment I plan my snacks like a yoghurt fruit bar or some fruit. I am someone who likes to be in control and so I try to plan what I'm going to have the day before, so I don't binge. I will definitely try eating a bit more meat and adding some more veg to my meals to bring up the calories. Thank you for the advice :)

Avoiding snacks is best if you can, but snacking healthily within your calorie range is far better than falling off the wagon and hitting the chocolate / crisps. I eat larger meals instead and it works for me. Good luck. James
