Greetings!

I'm new here, but like everyone am trying to lose weight ( two stone to be exact)! I am a young 63, an artist, so a fair amount of standing or sitting involved. I do try and walk every day or cycle , and have discovered I can swim for free at a relatively local pool, so that's definitely a bonus.

I've realised that I don't drink nearly enough water so I am rectifying that , I now drink two litres a day and feel better for it, plus the trips ( upstairs to the loo) are an added bit of exercise! I do feel better for the water and I have noticed that I don't feel so hungry either. My problem is I have no idea how many calories any foods I'm eating are, or how many I should be eating daily, all the apps I've found are American so don't have the same foods. If anyone could point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful !

On a positive note, I started my diet on Monday, cut out sugar, potatoes. Drank my two litres of water per day and had breakfast and one main meal, usually steamed or grilled fish and vegetables. I have lost 4lbs!!

Thank you for your time!

Hi Eva54 and welcome

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI (can be found in the pinned Newbie post) to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for 😊

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate 😊

To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support - which is great to get ideas of what other people are eating and I have to confess to nicking some of their menu's :) and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too 😊

Cheering you to success to reach your goals 🎉🎉🎉

Thank you for your help Minnie! I am using a mobile so I'll start trying to get used to all the available help and where to find it!

Hello

You seem to be doing pretty well so far, so you are on the right track. How long have you been drinking the two litres per day?

Art, what kind of art do you do? I love art.

Hi Jimatom! I started the water thing seriously on Monday and I've actually noticed the difference. My big problem is I have a very sweet tooth, love baking, so I've had cut down on the baking and sugar and that's hard for me, but I've realised that although I don't feel or act 63 ( however 63year olds act)! My metabolism has slowed down, I have always been a steady 9stone and now I'm 11 stone , so two stone has to go!!

As for my art I draw in pastels, mainly portraits!

Thanks for your time and have a great Sunday!

If you are running to the loo a lot you should find that this settles after a couple of weeks. Your body has to adapt to it.

I used to draw and portraits were my thing too. I haven't now for about a year. I am trying to start again.

Enjoy your day Eva.

Have a good day too!

Well I was told by my GP that two litres was about right, but I've actually thought the same thing myself!

Thank you Black Beauty!!

Good luck and welcome to the community!

Re american calorie counters - with my fitness pal I've found searching for items with tesco in the search gets me uk results e.g. tesco chickpeas or tesco red pepper even. If you're looking up a certain brand then of course try that brand rather than 'tesco'. Most things are in there - and if they're not you can use 'quick add' and put them in manually. But things like fruit and veg which I get from the local shop have no brand, but if I just look up peppers, tomatoes etc the results are in cups or another American format. So I've found adding tesco to the search really helps! Remember to enter fractions to the serving quantity too. E.g. if you only added 1/4 of that red pepper into your ratatouille etc. Also remember to save regular recipes so you can easily add groups of e.g. onion/tinned tomato/olive oil if these are often the first stages of your cooking :) Welcome and good luck :)
