A commitment to myself

I've put 2 stone on in 6 months because I'm in a stressful job that I do not enjoy. I've used my job as an excuse to eat crap and do no exercise (too tired when i get home) and i've ignored that i've been putting on the pounds.

Now I've got my friends wedding in 11 weeks and although i cannot change my job situation right now, I need to lose some weight so i feel good about myself at the wedding with friends and family.

Any advice to get started with?

Hi Amy! One of the administrators will likely be along in a minute to send you a list of hints and help with using the forum! In the meantime, HI! Welcome to the group!

I'm glad you have joined us, and i can see from your post that you really feel determined to make a change. I have made (and felt) huge change since coming here with a similarly fed up but resolute attitude.

The main lesson that I have learned is that we need to count our calories, every crumb of them, to see what we are eating and keep it at a level where weightloss is going to happen. Sounds simple, but very easily we lie to ourselves about what is passing our lips, or live in ignorance of the volume of cals we are consuming by being in the dark about how much energy each food provides.

Being vigilant and informed is vital.

I have also learned to accept that long term loss means long term change, and so I am undoing some bad habits and toxic feelings about myself and food. My weightloss has been slower than previous regimes (23 pounds in 3 months) but I feel different. Really different.

After this, organisation - planning my meals, shopping for them, calculating their cals in advance has been the cornerstone of my success!

Hope I will see you in Daily Diary where we plan our meals, and in weekly weigh in, where we see how we have done!

Again, welcome!

:-)

Hi and welcome, Amy :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the NHS BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

I really recommend keeping an honest food diary for a couple of days. Maybe even do it retrospectively if you can - I know that once I start to keep a food diary I automatically eat better! Also, just start or at the longest wait until you have your next shopping day (if you do such a thing). Healthy eating can start with the tiniest of changes.

Hi - when you are having bad days at work you feel you deserve to eat whatever you like when you get home - I think lots of people will relate to that. However it doesn't solve the work problems as you know. Your work situation is not something you can change at the moment but your diet you can!

In fact once you get started it may prove a distraction from your job!

11 weeks is a long time and you can make quite a difference. My advice is to join NHS 12 week plan - it will help motivate you with planning, building in exercise etc. You will get loads of help and support on this forum.

Don't let your job run your life - you may be in a position to look for an alternative job soon - I hope so.

Good luck !
