Introducing Myself

Hi, a good friend recommended this site to me as I’m struggling with my weight, type 2 diabetes and more recently dangerously high blood sugar despite medication.

Up to the start of the pandemic I had just about reversed the diabetes, had started to lose weight via a low GI/GL diet and intermittent fasting. I really thought I’d got everything sorted and felt great.

I’m ashamed to say that living on my own and being in isolation for a year has really set me back, weight has piled on, diabetes meds have been increased to beyond the levels I was on when I was first diagnosed with T2 and my ‘get up and go’ has gone.

From today I’m going back to intermittent fasting (daily from 6pm to noon the following day) every day, follow a GL diet and keep a food diary. I would like to say that I will exercise but I’ve never enjoyed that, I will try though.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Sara, I have a little book which gives me a traffic light 🚦 for the majority of foods, and if I stick to 70% green and 30% amber foods with the occasional red, hopefully I’ll be ok. I have started reading the contents of processed foods too, especially sugar content and fat content.

I tend to read all the labels -good luck to you -

Hi M_n, many thanks for the welcome, I’m going to do my best to be an active member and lose some weight. At the moment it’s knowing what I need to do but having little motivation to do it.

in reply to Catmad10

I started out 5 weeks ago using the nhs weight loss app. On week 2 it introduced me to couch25k I'm on week 4 now. It's not for everyone but I feel like I've found something that was missing when I hadn't did any jogging or running since compulsory in school xx

Catmad10 profile image

Someone else has recommended couch24k and have said how good it is, I’m going to check it out. In less than 24 hours I have picked up so many useful tips xx

in reply to Catmad10

It's great and the best thing is you can repeat a week when it gets hard theres no pressure just motivation to get you the best you can be xx

Hi Catmad10 - great user name! You really are not alone, many of us found lockdown challenging - I was so upset when I gained a lot of weight whilst shielding alone for a year but being on here has helped me to make friends and feel better about myself. We're having a natter today about what we do/can do to boost our happiness - why don't you pop on and say hi to everyone; we're a really friendly bunch. All you need to do is click on this link: healthunlocked.com/weight-l...

So which day are you going to face the scales? All the groups are great just choose a day which is convenient for you. I usually join in on Thursdays :)

Then there's the Daily Diary you should have a look at. There's lots going on 😸

Catmad10 profile image
Catmad10 in reply to TheTabbyCat

I’ll do Thursday then. I’ll spend the weekend familiarisation myself with the general and pinned posts.

Welcome Catmad10. I also live alone and found the lock downs difficult especially the first one when I put on weight. With the help of this forum, I’ve been steadily taking weight off again since June of last year. Everyone is very friendly on the forum and I wish you the very best. The more you use the forum, the more you will get out of it. You can do this.

Thanks Lea, I’m determined to make the most of this site. I’ll probably ask daft questions but I’m determined to get the weight off and get as healthy as I can.

Don’t worry about asking questions because it took us all a while to find our way around the site. It’s a great site. Best wishes.

Hi and welcome. I understand the not being keen on exercise 😀. Have you looked at You Tube? There are many kinds of exercise on there. If you can find a channel that appeals I believe it would make it easier for you. I have a couple of favourites- Yes 2 Next is a good place to start, the instructor and her elderly mother do the exercises together - equipment often not needed - and the exercises are shown for standing and sitting. As I say there are many others (not all bright young things thankfully) with some good exercise ideas. Not forgetting that going out for a walk is great exercise too, just avoid the shops if you can😀.

Catmad10 profile image
Catmad10 in reply to AnnieW55

Thanks Annie, I invested in a step machine and get up to s respectable level then stop (because I’m just plain daft). I do use the Revitiv every day for 30 minutes, I know it’s not exercise but my legs feel great afterwards. I keep telling myself to walk and perhaps I’ll start on Monday morning.

Hi Catmad.I used to use a lot of words like perhaps and maybe. Then I started saying

Words like definitely and will.

I find walking around my local area really helps but build it up gradually.

I have seen things I didn’t know were there. Better get out in the fresh air if you can rather than stick inside. There is an app called active 10 where you set targets. Worth looking at.

Don’t be a slave to the scales. Join a weigh in day and only weigh yourself on that day.

You have taken a great first step by joining the forum.

All the best.

Catmad10 profile image
Catmad10 in reply to Whitesparrow

Hi Whitesparrow. I’ve set my weigh in day for Thursday. I can’t remember the last time I jumped on the scales, probably over a year ago, it’s far too depressing 😝. My main concern is my blood sugar, it is dangerously high as a result of stopping one type of diabetes tablet because of side effects. Of course my weight is also a major concern as it is linked. I will have a look at Active 10, thanks for the recommendation.

AnnieW55 profile image
AnnieW55Visitor

It’s good that you are doing something. It’s not always easy. I found out the hard way😀. After always exercising, in many forms over the years, two episodes of needing surgery and having limited mobility for a while afterwards found me comfortably ensconced on the sofa for a while. I did my physio but that was all.

Perhaps if you could add some different exercises and don’t do the same thing each time you might keep more motivated (works for me - mostly😀). I’m not meaning to preach to you, I just get carried away (my husband often wishes I was😀).

Catmad10 profile image
Catmad10 in reply to AnnieW55

Thanks Annie, I’m going to put a plan together as I’m quite overwhelmed at the moment. I’ve got a Sainsbury’s delivery next Thursday (a healthy shop if I say so myself 😻) which coincides with my first weigh in.

Hi Catmad10 I also went downhill with regards to my weight and exercise because of lockdown and developed prediabetes. If you haven't already read it I would recommend the book Diabetes No Thanks! Its gradually working for me and is a very informative book. Good luck with your journey, this forum gives amazing support 😁

Thank you Zendaya, I admit I’m overwhelmed with my inability to no longer control my blood sugar levels. Weight is a big issue.

Welcome to our fantastic site Catmad10 and I hope and feel that like me you have quite possibly made the most important choice by seeking help, support and guidance from a group who collectively will have experienced jour pains and difficulties. I wish you every success and hope to share those success and difficulties are f required along the way.

Catmad10 profile image
Catmad10 in reply to Dave1000

Thanks Dave, I hope so. I’m at my wits end and feel I’m going round in a dangerous circle. Weight loss is the prime motivator. Previously a healthy diet was easier than exercise. I am going back to the GI eating regime which is particularly good for diabetes. My aim is to get to a healthy weight and reverse the diabetes.

Dave1000 profile image
Dave10001 stone in reply to Catmad10

You will get there. If I could suggest just one thing it would be use the Daily Diary every day 👍

Hi Catmad

I could do with losing some weight myself. Ive lived alone for 7 years now & I wegh about 12st 2 I could do with weighing about 10 .5 really I do watch the sugar & fat content in foods & I cant excercise because of my lungs & my breathing restrictions -(not the way i used to anyway) -I could do or try to do those in the BLF book . A few years ago when I bought a safety jacket for horseriding I had to have my waist measured & it was a pretty big no I can tell you much to my ashame -not a normal no so i need to do something about it -to get my chlorestorol down & for the sake of my heart

Well Sara_2611, You're very welcome to join the forum and you and Catmad10 can help each other - and I hope you'll join in and make new friends here, as well.

You'll find everything you need by following this link healthunlocked.com/weight-l... to Pinned Posts. If you'd like to join the weigh in on Thursday with your friend, you'll see it there in Pinned Posts on the day. Also, have a look at the Daily Diary, where members log their meal plans, and all the other clubs and challenges on offer.

It sounds as though you've not yet fixed on an eating plan. Have a look at this straightforward one and see if it would suit you phcuk.org/wp-content/upload...

We find that the most successful members are the ones who join in, chat and encourage others so I hope you'll be one of those :)
