I NEED to lose weight I'm feeling really down and deflated! Signed up for this 12 week challenge maybe 4 weeks ago and havnt even started, I can easily count calories for breakfast and lunch and snacks etc but how do people do it when it comes to dinners? I live back with the family so I don't always cook dinner and if I do I cook for 5 so I literally have no idea how many calories I have in my dinner I try to portion control it but still have no idea how many calories??? Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated pleased.. So fed up and frustrated

Thanks

Hello, don't give up. I found a website called food focus very helpful in recording and working out calories. It's a bit onerous at first but I used it daily for about 3 months, also recording my activity. This led me to really look at my life style. Since last January I have lost 19kgs about 3 St. I no longer need to count calories because I know which meals are good. I still want to lose another 5 kgs. I have altered my whole approach to food. When we go out I eat normally, but at home I really cut back on 2 or 3 days and this really works for me. Averaging out the calories over a week. With family meals, try to cut down the size of your portion and also on things like gravy and sauces which are very calorific, but pile on those steamed, boiled and even roasted veg (roasted using a small amount of olive oil)

I hope that helps.

Hi. Firstly, don't allow yourself to be caged in by the fact that you signed up for this four weeks ago and haven't started - you will start when you're ready and the twelve weeks can progress from whenever that might be.

It is really difficult calculating dinner calories. You need to work out the calories in a few items you enjoy (scrambled eggs, a portion of meat, two sausages) and then add a load of veg to fill you up. It can be done - I'm veggie, my husband eats meat and I have two picky kids! Just spend some time looking for food that will work for you and then when you're ready....go for it.

I'd also recommend myfitnesspal - if you're into using apps. You can manually enter ingredients into the recipe section (of dishes you regularly make) and then it is stored for every time you make it. It's really simple to use.

By the way, you have started the process - you're on here asking for advice, you've worked out where you need to focus your attention (dinners) And you know you've got the calorie counting sorted for earlier in the day. Now, give yourself a pat on the back and a big hug and know that the twelve weeks can start tomorrow or Monday or whenever you're ready. It's a learning process that could benefit you for the rest of your life.

Ahh thank you :) I'm working nights at the moment so will have to try and work out calories for some dinners when I'm awake at some point ha! When I cook it's really healthy so I'm not too worried but other people cool quite often and have no idea what they put in things :/

Just keep trying! Thanks again z

Dear Jessie

One word... Motivation

if you dont have that, you wont be able to loose Fat (not weight)

motivation is an easy skill to learn, just search up " How to improve self-motivation" or something like that.

Good Luck

Judah

Hello Jessie-leigh,

Don't be too upset about haven't started your weight loss. Weight loss needs ample of time, extra effort and determination in order to achieve your goal. To lose 1 pound a week, you need to cut 500 calories per day. You can do this by eating less, exercising more, or both. Try these strategies: Cut 250 calories from your daily diet.

Hi Jessie. Don't give up and you can always start anytime. Be motivated and inspired enough to work on your weight loss plan. And for dinner ideas, just give emphasize on a meal with a load of lean protein, fresh veggies, fruit, and whole grains will help. All the best for you.

Not sure where you live but there are so many great web sites that will give you the calorie count for specific amounts that you inquire about. How many calories in 1 cup of baked squash? How many calories in 1/4 cup of English cucumber? Etc.. Really helpful for seeing that there are many things you can use smaller amounts of and reduce the # of calories.
