Potassium’s use and Trigeminal Neuralgia Events

Hello this is my first time posting so be kind. I have MS and have been prescribed Klor-Con M20 potassium as a result of diarrhea. Now I am having Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) events sometimes 3-times per day and as you know if you have had them they hurt. I read somewhere that a person said to avoid bananas because of possible link to TN events then taking Klor-Con M20 would be like eating a lot of bananas. So the question is what has been your experience with potassium and TN events. Thanks and yes I have calls in to the Dr that prescribed the Klor-Con M20 but no response yet. I’m desperate.

Hi, I’m glad you posted! I’m sorry, but I’m not familiar with potassium affecting TN. As mentioned before, I’d try searching past posts about TN. You may find more info there. I hope you’re better soon and that you hear back from your Dr ❤️🙏🏻

Welcome! I don't have experience with TN, but if your prescriber is not your neurologist, I would ask your neuro too.

We found this a while back thru a blood test.Vgkc+ autoantibody. It's to the potassium channel and separate from MS. Causes pain and other weird stuff too. It's often also a cancer marker but not always. It wasnt cancer in my case. More POTS, Dysautonomia and small nerve fiber neuropathy. It's supposedly extremely rare. I don't think it's as rare as "they" think.

Well it is true that bananas are high in potassium and if you are prone to having a l0ot of muscle spasms and do not otherwise take potassium then bananas are a good source but as a trigger to TN, I am not so sure to blame it on the potassium right away. I take potassium because I take a heavy duty diuretic and if i dont then I suffer mightily with muscle spasms from the diuretic. It helps keep my heart regulated as well. I have labs done quarterly to keep a eye on my levels. Potassium is an essential mineral that the body and muscles need for function. If your levels are too high or too low it can throw all sorts of things out of whack for sure.. I would wait for the doc to call seriously..
