Back from the dentist

I had to get the tooth pulled. There was bone loss around it and a bad infection. He feels that my treatment for my MS is what caused this. He wants to evaluate me further to see what is going on and to try to prevent this from happening again and he might need to send me to a specialist. I am having some throbbing and some pain so off to the medicine cabinet. You all take care and don't worry if I don't respond to you till tomorrow

So he thinks theMavenclad is to blame? Are you going to tell your neurologist? I am sorry about your tooth, did he give you antibiotics? I hope it’s not too painful for you 🤗

He doesn't think it is the mavenclad but probably the Copaxone that I took for 16 years. He did give me antibiotics but no pain medication. Glad I had some old Tylenol 3s from some other thing a couple of years ago. The pain I am having now is just as bad as before he pulled the tooth. I am using ice packs and they are helping a little bit. I am going to call my neurologist tomorrow and see what she thinks but she is not an MS specialist so she might not know if that is the case. I might reach out to the Copaxone people and see what they have to say. Good night and if I don't get a chance to. Merry Christmas

Your dentist is not an MS specialist either! Did he say why he thinks Copaxone (which you are not even taking now) could cause an abscessed tooth? Copaxone is not an immunosuppressant.

Turtlepie profile image
Turtlepie in reply to BettysMom

He said it could of caused the bone loss not the abscess

in reply to Turtlepie

I have had to have a couple of teeth pulled over the last decade, with bone loss and some infection. I agree that your dentist is not an MS specialist and there is no way of knowing that Copaxone caused this, (in my honest opinion). I believe sometimes doctors want to have an acceptable answer or reason for the ills we must face. They do call it “practicing medicine” for a reason. I hope you feel better! I know that pain and it’s not fun. I ended up getting 2 implants for what it’s worth. Best of luck; the antibiotics helped my pain the most....once they kicked in. Huggs

Sorry to hear that. I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago. The dentist told me it was because I am clenching my teeth & there was too much pressure on that tooth due to misalignment of the teeth. I have TMJ, my top and bottom jaws do not match angles and I have big teeth for the size of my jaw. I guess I just got in the wrong lines when they were handing out jaws & teeth. 😀

I had another tooth 10 years ago do the same thing but not all the pain and infection

I pray the pain will abate quickly now that the tooth is pulled. I hope you can still have a lovely Christmas.

I alternate dentist for 6 months, then periodontist in 6 months (previous gum surgery). I had an appointment last week with periodontist and they suggested I reschedule for a Tuesday first appointment at 8a.m. so I am first one there after no one has been there or used equipment sonce Friday before (he does surgery on Mondays) to minimize covid risk since i have MS. I thought that was really nice of them.

I hope you recover from your tooth/mouth issues quickly.

Sorry to hear that. I think Copaxone caused a lot of the dental problems that I have now. I have been off it for a few years now but it has been quite a while since I had been to a dentist. Had to have 2 teeth pulled this year...top and bottom, right above each other.

Turtlepie profile image
Turtlepie in reply to bxrmom

I am sorry that you have this problem. It was ten years ago that I lost my first tooth like this and I have been off Copaxone for a couple of years. Was on it for over 16 years

I was on Copaxone for about 11 years before I switched to Tecfidera about 3 years ago.

Turtlepie in reply to bxrmom

I tried that and gilenya and rebif but the side effects were too much for me
