Midwestern Barns

I’m back home with family in Illinois. Had a great time in Amish farmland yesterday. I’d never taken pictures of the round barns at the U of I In Champaign, though I don’t know why. I love old barns, and these round barns are a favorite.

Old barns have character. 😎 New ones not so much. 😝

When I was in that area I did not see these interesting barns. I took pictures when we I came in the area to see my nephew/wife at grad school at U of IL at Urbana. Then we drove out to Terre Haute, ID. to visit my undergrad roommate. And then back to U of IL to visit my nephew/wife ( we couldn’t reach them the first time when we arrived) then drove to Chicago. To deal with boredom with the drive I took photos of barns and the sky; posted some on FB. I miss seeing the open land and sky. Scary when tornado is a threat.

Central IL does have some of the best open skies around! Love being able to look across the fields at sunrises/sunsets.

I'm in IN and am tired of the flat land. I want hills!!

I remember wanting some hills or greenery. I like being around the Great Lakes. Water, green and not as hot in the summer.

I was born in MA and lived in CT before having to move to IN. I miss the hills and the ocean nearby. Nothing relaxes me like the smell of the ocean and the sound of the waves.

I grew up in Huntington, NY from age 6(born in Brooklyn Ny but lived in Queens before moved to Huntington). We lived 6 miles from Huntington Bay, down hill bike ride; we were the poor folks of Huntington, winding roads and hills, Long Island Sound. After college in Oberlin, lived in Upton NY when I worked at Brookhaven National Labs. After work we would take walks on different beaches Fire Island - Atlantic Ocean. While I was at college at Oberlin, Ohio, my sister was in Delaware Ohio. Then lived in Naperville IL, Glenn Ellyn IL, would drive into Chicago to ride bikes around the lake, the times when traffic wasn’t an issue. I like some parts of MI and WI. We never drove to Idaho. It didn’t sound interesting. I missed the 4 seasons. I missed the smell of salt water, the ocean. Such a rejuvenating experience - take ferry over to CT. Liked going Mystic Seaport, Ct. and neighboring towns. I liked when we went to MA, since my husband studied at MIT and went to conferences, and of course Martha’s Vineyard. Once, I dated a guy from Missouri. Driving from Naperville IL to St Louis Missouri. Ugh. I know how you must feel living in IN. Yes we drove from IL to IN or driving from OH. Flat. Yes hills & water. And I prefer living on an island. No big temperate swings. I even miss living near NJ shore in Middletown. Well, I have to see where we will retire. I was wiling to live near a lake or pond. 🥰.

I am close to retirement and am stuck here because the cost of living is lower here and I can't afford to move away. So I plan to stay here and take as many vacations away from here as I can.

Completely understand! I may have to do the same.

No way! Give me flat land with a never-ending view! This lady doesn't do well with hills - I get car sick too easily!

Living in the country gives me the ability to see and appreciate the beauty all around. I don't do well living in town.

Part of what makes it great - different people. Life would be so boring if we were all the same!

I don’t blame you Erin they are super cool. I love barns myself. Before we moved to toccoa I owned one my uncle kept his miles in that over 100 years old but it was falling in before I owned it but it was really interesting. I still kept my riding mower inside because the hallway was still solid. But I enjoyed plundering in it. I’ve got a lot of mule collars and leather harness pieces. I had them on my basement wall in our house we sold before we moved from south Forsyth where my Drs are.

ILOVE Lancaster, the kids and I lived in a house in Manheim that was built in 1798! We lived there for 12 or 13 years. It is beautiful. We lived the farmers market. And it is so relatively close to Gettysburg, Valley Forge, D.C. , Harrisburg, Hershey, etc. Great memories! 🙂

Beautiful! I wonder if any of these barns have been converted to residences? I have always wanted to live in a barn... :-D

greaterexp profile image
greaterexp in reply to carolek572

These are just used for storage now at the U of I, but I’ve seen several converted barns during the years. I’ve always wondered if there is a lingering aroma of manure.

Having a wonderful time with kids and grandkids. The kids are so sweet, smart, and funny, and my kids are so witty. I’m in danger of wetting my pants all day!
