Balance

I thought it was just BPPV, but my morning vertigo and balance issues have stayed all morning. I brought out the Rollator and have taken Dramamine, but do you all have any other suggestions? I'm determined not to fall. If it's still with me by Monday, I'll call the neurologist. I do have a set of MRIs yet to be scheduled.

I hope what you have done will help and will pass soon. You have my prayers. I dont have that problem too often I just plant myself on the couch and do my best to work on my crocheting projects.

Thank you. At least I had a great laugh cooking and serving breakfast with the Rollator. I told our guest not to worry; there were probably lots of waitresses who use a Rollator. We really cracked up when my guest, with a deadpan expression, asked if I could get him some more coffee.

I hope your vertigo stayed away. I'm sure you were a great waitress, umm host I mean. 😀. My neurologist gave me meclizine for my vertigo. I don't take it all the time, but it really helps when I need it.

You can buy meclizine over the counter. I ALWAYS keep it on hand because you never know when you might need it. From your comment, I gather that I take it way more often than you. Good for you! Dizziness is horrible.

Humbrd in reply to Bwine

Thanks, I didn't realize you could buy it over the counter. Since my prescriptions are always usually less than $5 it's probably better I get it that way.

Bwine in reply to Humbrd

It’s the “non drowsy” form of Dramamine. Remember this in case you’re ever caught without your prescription. And most places have the store’s brand which costs less than name brand. I buy Kroger brand.

Thanks for the good info!

Meclizine hasn't worked well for me, but regular old Dramamine seems to help with the nausea.

Have you started any new medications, greaterexp ? Also, are you drinking enough water? That does it to me as well. The last time that I was having really bad balance issues was when I was diagnosed with BPPV, but you ruled it out? I know that my BPPV was so horrible that it kept me in bed for days... I hope that you are better soon. It is wise of you to make your doctor aware of this. Keep Smiling :-D

greaterexp profile image
greaterexp in reply to carolek572

My PCP said she didn't think it was BPPV . She suggested trying an antihistamine, but it doesn't seem to be helping. I'm not really sure what's going on. I do try to drink plenty, but I will pay more attention to that today. It's so easy to forget!

carolek572 profile image
carolek572CommunityAmbassador in reply to greaterexp

That's good because if it is a med, then you will be flushing it out of your system more quickly. Be Well, and let your doctor know of this, sooner rather than later. :-D

I have started some new meds, but the vertigo started before I began them. I hope it's not related. Thank you for the suggestions. It's hard to think straight sometimes!

It takes great skill and balance to be able to carry a hot cup of coffee and push your walker/rollator with one hand and not trip up or spill the coffee. Let us know how you get on, maybe you are over doing things. Try and have some you time, and rest. 👍

My daughter called. She said I didn’t “sound right.” Told her I was getting winded easily, after 5 min of walking, and legs hurting worse than usual, but I thought just allergies, bad air, Ms, etc, just staying in bed a lot more. “ Mom, it’s my job to keep you out of hospital. You have an oxygen problem, call dr Bain (pc) Monday. Could be electrolytes imbalance or bladder infection gone upward (been this way since bladder infection), so since she is the Respiratory Specialist I said ok. And made me some electrolyte water. I’m down to doing two things: cooking dinner for hubby and talking on here, 3 things - paying bills. Who knows. It’s so easy to blame MS.

Hope you are feeling better this morning. Please try to get out of bed more. The longer you stay in the bed the more your lungs will not want to work right. I'm not a health professional. But I think the more that we try to get up, the better it is for us physically and psychologically. Maybe try to rest in a chair in the living room. I really hope that you get this figured out with your primary care doctor tomorrow.

Rest and try to. Cool down maybe in a tub of cool water. Good luck I hope you feel better soon.

so sorry to hear such extreme balance issues, I have not ever found anything that really worked to prevent the balance issues, but the tools an amazing physical therapist gave me have helped to minimize falls, and damage when I do. Also as crazy as it sounds learning to ride a two wheeler again with the balance issues helped me to develope new coping skills( of course I have some new scars to attest to the challenge, but nother other than pride permanently damaged)Robert

greaterexp profile image
greaterexp in reply to

I have a three-wheeled bike that I haven't ridden at all this year. I doubt it would help much with balance, since the bike does all the balancing for me! I'm so glad your bike riding is helping you, even with the extra scars.

This morning was not as severe and it didn't last like it did yesterday. I was an idiot and forgot the leave the Rollator by the bed last night, so my dear husband had to waltz me to the bathroom. I offered to crawl, but he was my knight in shining armor. Bless him. I put the Rollator beside the bed today since I'm on my own in the morning.

I’m so sorry to hear you’re having to deal with this; I don’t get on here often but do know you do so much for this community. I wish they had a better solution for vertigo, but it does appear to be common. Water is important as has been said, but in my case sometimes salt is also needed. Of course our diets are probably different but because I try to eat clean, sometimes I don’t get enough salt. (I personally find EmergenC drink helpful for some reason.) And, slowly trying to walk or other form of exercise to get blood flowing through all areas of my body. I never know what the heck is caused by MS as new weird symptoms pop up for me. Side note: my father was taken to the ER the other day because he has been experiencing dizzy spells and we were all concerned; he does not have MS but is almost 85. Docs did all sorts of tests (x-rays, bloodwork...) and sent him home with the diagnosis of “positional vertigo”. He’ll follow up with regular doctor next week. I’m sure I wasn’t much help but I definitely feel for you. It’s so not fun! I find myself sometimes doing everything in slow motion with caution. Best of luck. Xo

Thank you for your encouragement and suggestions. I hope your dad gets over his vertigo quickly. It sure is miserable for a person of any age, but at 85, it must be especially hard.

It doesn't seem to help, and I get a little nauseated with the vertigo. Dramamine seems to help a bit with the nausea.

Have you been doing your canalith repositioning procedures? Standing on your head for half the day helps? I've had it. It really stinks. It did go away, eventually. And luckily, never came back? Or maybe I just got used to it and live with it still today, and ignore it???? If you don't think about all the wonderful M.S. "gifts", most of them CAN be ignored, with enough effort.

Yesterday I tried a freebie from the local grocery store, called Bubbl "R" Antioxident Sparking Water -- "That Boosts Energy & Restores Balance". Or so it claims. Mine was Cherry Guava blend? I was dogged tired yesterday, why??? It was hot, just like any other summer day, and not that humid. So why???

So I figured, good time to try it. Did not boost energy, nor restore balance. Why? Yes, caffeine and B12, but only xxx and xxx. My Jet Alert caffeine pills are 200 mg each, along with a couple cups of coffee, yeah, I think it helps??? And the B12's, those are candy, right? Subliminal candy that boosts energy? Yeah, I carefully limit to (2) a day because?

Though I jokingly stood on one leg for a while without falling down while I watched TV in the super freeze room with the central air AND the window unit set to FREEZE. Didn't dare close my eyes though with one leg up, as my neurologist wasn't there to catch me before I fell. Besides, he wasn't that good at it. Whacked my head on the tile floor too many times?

But you know what really energizes and promotes balance well? A Shopping Cart in a Grocery Store! Even with a half mask respirator and HEPA cartridges from the days of asbestos inspections, project management, and other equally crazy things involving the "A" word. Now the "A" word has taken on a whole new meaning. Don't ever say Alexa in our house! Or..... Things will happen!

Alexa, Restore Energy AND Balance. Response, Dum Dum Tones. Guess it doesn't know that one?

greaterexp profile image
greaterexp in reply to MarkUpnorth

Ha! I think if the vertigo is still there tomorrow, I'm going to do the repositioning exercises. My neurologist and PCP didn't think it was BPPV, even though I've had problems with it before. I was too tired to ask why. I should be getting MRIs soon, so if there is a new lesion causing balance problems, they should pick that up.

Make sure and keep an eye on blood pressure tho

kdali profile image

Oh no, I’m sorry you’re struggling! Do you have to go anywhere? Reminding yourself about slowly standing is all I have to offer. I’d call to schedule those!

greaterexp profile image
greaterexp in reply to kdali

I slept with my head elevated last night and awoke with practically no problems. I do think it's just BPPV, despite what the doctors are saying right now. The neurologist's office is typically extremely slow in getting things done, but if I don't hear something soon, I'll call again to get things moving.
