Why it's taking so long

goatgal profile image

I'm putting a little bit of weight on the ankle, but I'm still a long way from walking. The photo will explain part of the reason. The other parts are my 78 years and the MS. You have all been so encouraging, helping me believe that I will be able to do this. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

It's been such a long journey, but you're getting there! You're my hero for persevering through the pain and discouragement to get to where you are now. Keep going! And then you for the updates. What wonderful good news! You're our favorite "bionic woman."

Oh Goatgal, that looks so painful, no wonder it’s taking so long to heal, but it will, and with you behaving yourself and doing the exercises it won’t be long before you are able to get rid of the scooter. Time flies, it will soon be spring and you will be outside planting your garden, hugs Jimeka 🤗 🤗

jimeka Royjr greaterexp mrsmike Morilyn First of all, apologies for not explaining that it is NOT painful. Tender and swollen, yes, but since I don't walk or put much weight on the foot, it is most just a nuisance and the boot (which is on all day long) a weighty encumbrance. But today is sunny for the first time in a while, and it is frustrating not to be able to go out the door for a walk! But as jimeka says, I'll keep working at it and maybe by spring...

jimeka Sweet friend, it was sometimes painful before I went to rehab, but the amount of hardware explains why a return to bipedalism is so gradual! I am grateful every day that it isn't painful. That might really hold me back.

I don’t think anything could hold you back, you show such strength, by reading what you have had to endure, you are an encourager, blessings Jimeka 🌻

Well, I'm sure it was painful to begin with, but so happy for you that it is coming along. You are my new hero. As we all say, never give up and you haven't. Thank you for your update. You are a warrior in so many ways! Spring is around the corner!💐🌸🌻🌼

it is good to hear from you. Thank you for the update and pic. I wish you the best in this ongoing healing process and hope that it be speedy.

Looks like it was really painful to start at least. I broke my ankle almost 10 years ago now. I remember the boot well. My kids called it a robotic boot. It had metal slats on the sides with a large hinge at the ankle. That reminded them of a robot cartoon they liked to watch.

Peruzzot I wish my boot flexed at the ankle. It is rigid, and the sole is thick, and slightly rounded in the mid section so that the boot can rock back & forth, But like yours, it is rigid on either side from knee to ankle. I've grown to hate it but at least, for the last few nights, I can take it off when I sleep. And that feels good!

I didn't need all of the hardware attached to the bones. Maybe that's why they gave me one that flexed a little at the ankle. It took months to get the full range of motion back after the boot was taken away. Do the work the PT gives you. It's hard, it hurts, but it's worth it in the end.

Peruzzot No fear of me not working hard enough to regain strength and mobility. Yesterday, I doubled the 25' I was able to walk in the walker to 50', and I will do all the exercises given me. My goal is to use the walker to get down the ramp and into a car, and then to get out of the car and into the surgeon's office on Dec. 20. Not only will I have made progress, but I won't have to shell out $300 for wheelchair transport again! (Yet another disadvantage of country living!)

You are an inspiration. Hang in there and you are in my prayers 🙏😁

Goatgal, it's Fancy. Whoever said your golden years were your best lied like a big dog! We don't bounce and we don't heal like we used to! Please take care of that ankle and make sure you give it the time it needs to heal even if it test your patience. Old age is not for sissies! But we all have to realize it's better than the alternative. Fancy.

Glad you don't have pain with it. Had a friend who broke her knee earlier this year. Slow and steady, pt, & different exercises helped get back to where she was able to walk, run, and bike again. Keep up the good work 😉

That’s a nasty break! Glad you are beginning to mend 🌈

erash Thank you for the good wishes. Healing seems to require a lot of energy, but perhaps that is partly because until recently I wasn't moving around much. Now, because I can stand for brief periods and stomp along with the walker when supervised, I am back to baking bread and making soup when I feel the urge. I'm not overdoing, but I do seem to run out of steam about four in the afternoon and bedtime rolls around awful early.

Jesmcd2 Aye aye! I will stay out of corners. And, the next time you are looking for some of those lost marbles, remember those OCD mice that keep burying them, hiding them from those of us who wonder where they went!

The only x-ray I've seen with more hardware was my son's after he had his entire spine fused. Adding metal to stabilize will help but it will take awhile to get over it. Glad the worst is past. Get better each day!!!

goatgal profile image

mrsmike9buffering You are correct that it is a lot of hardware. The surgeon has already told me that it is mine (evidently some people can have plates/screws removed). The edema in the lower leg still affects motion and flexibility, but every day the PT is here, I can do a little more with the walker so I am getting stronger and she tells me I am walking more naturally. I just wish I could do this more than twice a week because I am not yet confident enough to use the walker unsupervised. What surprises me the most is how much energy is required to do even the little bit that I am capable of! But, onward! One of these days I will be able to walk again.

@goatgal, you have a wonderful CAN DO attitude, Reminds me that I should never wallow in self pity. Yeah, it's okay for a teeny bit of time, but then I should get back up and try again. If it doesn't work, try something else. YOU are an inspiration to me, goatgal! Thank you, and keep up the good healing, and it's okay to take it easy. You know what's best for you.

Keep Smiling and Be Strong,

Carole :-D
