I suspected it would and when it first was approved I contacted the pharma company that sells Ampyra asking if they had studies supporting this. They said they did not and that they opted to stay a niche MS drug used for improving walking speed. The mechanism of action is increased nerve conduction speed so it make perfect sense it could do more. Here's recent research supporting. Ampyra benefits both cognition and physical functioning
erash - Thanks for the link. I believed this to be true as well. I believe it has improved my bladder & bowel issues as well as walking. I don't believe I have suffered any cognitive issues so can't comment on that. It certainly hasn't helped my dyslexia or poor spelling 😄 !
erash I had a quick look at some of the other news items found in the link you provided and some of these studies draw some extraordinary conclusions. I'm wondering if this is normal for medical research in that many studies produce results that are later proven to be not quite the break thru they first appear. You know what they say - if something appear to be too good to be true, it probably is... The ones that caught my attention are the ones on -

I tried Ampyra 3 years ago. I only took it for a couple of weeks because my neuro doc said I'd know immediately, like the first week, whether it helped or not. It didn't so I stopped taking it. I still have the rest of the bottle. Anything with no down side is worth a try.
Hidden the literature says 2-6 weeks for response to Ampyra?
That's very interesting. I just took her word for it. I only saw her twice. She moved from Seattle to Atlanta (where I'm originally from) and I had to change doctors, which I wasn't unhappy about. She hammered me about starting a DMD, but I'm JCV+, and also have some cardiac issues which ruled out some of the meds. I didn't like the way she pressured me. I felt like she must own stock in the pharmaceuticals she was pushing. The doctor I have now gives me my options and his recommendations but ultimately supports my decision, which I appreciate. MS is all theory until your walking in it. I respect my doc's education, experience and knowledge and I listen to him. But I'm taking the risk with the possible side effects, not him. Now that you're giving me this info about Ampyra, I'm going to talk to him about it. I don't think I have enough to take it for 6 weeks (and what's on my shelf might be expired anyway), but I'm sure he'd prescribe it again. Thanks, erash!
Def. talk with your doc. I'm only telling you what the literature says. Your doc knows his/her clinical experience or contact Acorda (the pharmacy co)
I'm curious tho
So let me know what u find
