Hello all. Is anyone on Prozac for their OCD? How long did it take to work for you? I’m starting week 4 and almost feel worse. I switched from Zoloft and thinking about going back to it. Thank you.

I’ve been taking Prozac for over 30 years. It seems to help with the OCD. I’ve briefly tried other meds but always go back to the Prozac. Everyone is different though.

While side effects can start shortly after starting or changing the dosage of Prozac, the therapeutic effects can take up to 12 weeks to show up. Of course, the same medication can have different results for different people, and my personal experience with Prozac was that it did not take anywhere near that long. Be aware that, for some people, Prozac may lose its effectiveness at some point.

I know it can seem like you are in an unending search for the drug or combination of drugs that will finally make the OCD go away, or at least become manageable, but keep trying, and even if it doesn't make the OCD go away completely, an even somewhat effective drug can give you enough improvement to make other treatment, CBT and ERP, easier to start. And though they are not pleasant to go through, the behavior therapies will ultimately take you much further towards making your OCD manageable in the long term.

Good Luck.

Definitely takes many weeks to really kick in, so give it a chance. It eventually lost its efficacy with me and I went on to Vortioxetine and Quetiapine.

There are always new remedies and treatments, never stop looking!

hello,

I have been on Prozac, or the generic version, for about 12 years now. I had to have adjustments since I first started, but in general it does very well for me. My therapist and I talk about how it’s not full proof. I will still have episodes of ocd, but the medicine makes it much more manageable and puts me on a better foot then if I wasn’t. I know one thing I struggled with was watching the timeline and comparing it to how I felt. Continue to talk with your doctor and be honest where you feel your at, but try not to focus on the medicine and time too much. There might need to be an adjustment in dosage, or perhaps just takes a bit longer since you were on a different med. Again, all that info you can talk to your doctor about. But I would keep trying and have faith. There are many options for the doctors to look into.

I got taken off lexapro 20 since the dose was too low for ocd and the higher dosage has cardiac risks. I've been on 80 mg of prozac for 8 weeks. 80 mg for 3 weeks. I was able to drop my klonopin dose from 2mg to 1mg. I wnet thru depression, anxiety and intrusive thoughts. I always need 80 mg for my ocd after 8 weeks finally see thelight Your on a very low dosage for ocd. I uped my dosage every 2 weeks

It took at least 8 weeks on 80 mg for my ocd to subside. I feel back in control. I've been decreasing clonazepam weekly from 1mg to .25 will be off soon. It works hang in there and I weigh 116 pounds 5'3 and need 80 mg. Its awful waiting for it to work Hang in there
