How do you deal with mistakes ?

I know mistakes are part of being a human, but with responsibility ocd how do you deal with them ? I make innocent mistakes the same as everyone else, be at work or home, no ones perfect gets everything right and I try and tell my self this over and over however my brain automatically as we well know jumps to the worst conclusion and I can never seem to bring my self down from this state of catastrophe, feel like I’m constantly waiting or treading on egg shells for the worst thing possible, which in turn causes more mistakes to happen. How do I get off of this loop. It really does make me lose all hope and sends me in to a suicidal panic.

I am sorry that you are going through a difficult time.

The best way is to sit with the anxiety, and the feared consequences.

The anxiety will be high in the beginning, but it will get lower.

The thoughts will fade away on their own.

I hope you feel better.

I'm sorry to hear your suffering. I have always had high expectations for myself as a perfectionist, and wanted to be sure I did everything right. If i made a mistake, it would send me into a total panic thinking "how could ever have missed this???". Then all of my self-confidence was gone for a very long time and I was on a guilt trip. I would find it very difficult to make a decision or trust myself to do anything wondering if I would miss something again. I sought re-assurance all the time because 'some else's decisions must be valid...not mine".

Whoa!! OCD has a terrible hold of us and really loves it when we feel like this. As you have said, you logically know no one is perfect and we all makes mistakes. You know this realistically, but your OCD has other ideas.

I had to really come to the conclusion that it is OCD talking, and not me. IT is OCD making me feel this way and making everything a panic. Just because it's in my head doesn't mean it's right!!! It is OCD torturing me. I had to learn to put my OCD to the side and know that I am NOT my OCD. It's the loop that my brain is currently in.

For myself, I had to stop compulsing. This is really the clue to the whole thing and getting better. If you are not in therapy, you really need to be. Please do not settle for just any therapist. Please seek a therapist that knows OCD treatments. I wasted many MANY years with therapists that had good hearts, but really didn't understand. Learn everything you can about OCD and you will learn so much about it, and helps available.

You can learn so much on the iocdf.org website, as well as find a therapist in your area. You might need some medication to help as you work in therapy. They seem to work together well.

Hang in there.....you are not alone. We are all learning and supporting each other here. Hope to hear from you soon~

We all have to put effort into things for them to work. and often, effort comes in the context of pain. But we seem to misunderstand that pain leads to improvement, so we punish ourselves in hopes of making things right. in my opinion, effort is futile when there is no compassion. if you aren't doing things with kindness, and affection, the result won't bring any joy, and only regrets remain. it's completely alright for you to be kind to yourself; you know your intentions the best, and you know what you deserve and what you don't, or else you wouldn't be here. let yourself be kind to yourself and to everything around you, try your best to distinguish your own voice from the ocd's. I know how hard it is for you. And beyond that, you can do it. You will persevere.
