Hi everyone,I am new today. I just saw that I was to write about me, not a problem. I like to write. I have 7 sisters, and one brother. I am a gramma to 4 grandchildren, and now a great gramma, to 2 grandsons, and one sweet granddaughter. I joined because, I am looking for help with one on my granddaughters, who has this awful ocd.

She has suffered with this for 5 yrs. and to watch her pain with this is unbearable for me. When she has an anxiety attack it can last for a few hours.I have read the stories and they are heartbreaking as well. I am here for you as well. love, a gramma in pain.

I would like to welcome you to the OCD Support Network.

We are here to provide support, sympathy and compassion to each other.

I am so sorry to hear that your granddaughter is suffering from OCD.

I hope you can find treatment which will help her.

It is touching to see that as a grandmother you have so much concern for her.

She is lucky to have you.

Take Care.

Welcome. OCD is an awful disorder but it’s treatable. I would recommend local therapists who specialize in ERP. Medication works to take the edge off and let people work on their fears. This a good starting place. God bless.

hello, I was just wondering what ERP is ? I never heard of it. What does it do to help with the OCD torment. I have had a terrible day with my granddaughter. She happened to see the toilet was clogged and the day went down from there. I tried my best to talk to her, but as you know reasoning does not work. I had to do all her rituals all day, and i thought I was going to have a breakdown myself. I really just wanted to run away. She had to shampoo all the carpets and I had to take my sweater off and change clothes, because I walked in the bathroom to clean. Then wash my hands, clean every thing I might have touched, and on and on it went. I am so overwhelmed as she is too. I suggested medication, but she is afraid to take it. counseling is out too. I would like for her to have the new treatment TMS, but her ins. will not pay and the cost is $10,000 cash. Just sick today. Heart broken. much love, deanna

I am so sorry to hear. I have it so once it’s triggered, it can send a sufferer into a panic. ERP is exposure response prevention. Basically you expose yourself to what you fear and don’t do the rituals. It is very hard but works. I will pose some links below that are helpful by doctors.

The meds can be helpful. She may experience some side effects in the beginning but they can decrease her symptoms by 60 percent.

Hello, Gramma. I am a grandma myself. I have had ocd all my life. I really encorage your granddaughter to try medication. It isn't a miracle, but it can take the edge off. You can try to find a therapist who will work on a sliding scale. Make sure they understand ocd and cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT. You can go too to learn how best to react to her symptoms.

I encorage you to read everything you can for family members of sufferers. You must look after yourself as well.

In general, it is counterproductive to let yourself get pulled into your loved one's rituals.

Tell your granddaughter we can almost all get at least some better with treatment and knowledge. Don't give up hope. And don't let this monster eat you up too, gramma. Bless you.

thanks so much , I appreciate it. Her last anxiety attack was this past Sun. It was so unbearable, I had to walk outside. I was so upset to see her in one of those attack. I have read the one book on OCD, and it was a help. The hard part was to get her to do the action it suggested. We were looking into TMS treatment, but it cost $10,000, as the ins. will not pay for it. She just found a wellness clinic that is doing a treatment called Ketamine. She talked to the pa, and is thinking about having it done. It has been around for years, but I never heard of it before. From the patients stories, they are getting help. We will be checking more of the research, as they have a 5 star rating. It is a lot cheaper thenTMS. Blessings to you, deanna
