Talking back to the Doomsayer

Hi all,

I wanted to share about talking back to the Doomsayer from a book.

Hope this helps.

The bibliography is listed below.

ERP essentially involves looking the Doomsayer in the eye and telling him, “I hear what you’re saying. I know that I face risks all day long and that I probably can’t know for certain that something terrible won’t happen. But I’m willing to accept that uncertainty and any anxiety that comes with it, and live my life anyway, even when it’s uncomfortable for me to do so.”

From your old OCD viewpoint, this attitude will seem totally confusing, to the point of making no sense at all. In fact, the idea of taking this stance may make you very uncomfortable, but instead of avoiding your fears, you’ll face them. Instead of minimizing risk, you’ll learn, bit by bit, to take on more and more risks in the service of living a richer, more fulfilling life, free of the most toxic effects of OCD. We won’t kid you that it will be easy. It won’t. But it will be worth the effort and will gradually get you closer to the life you want to lead.
