Discharge from hospital

Hi, my husband who suffers from MSA has been in hospital for about 12 days now after having several fainting episodes, some of them prolonged 10 mins and 20 mins plus lots of shorter ones. His specialist is unable to do anything with his meds to get him on a more even keel. Sometimes his BP soars as well. He is now apparently 'medically optimised' meaning he can be discharged. initially he will be discharged to a nursing home but he so wants to come home. Does anyone know or have experience of nursing needs being able to be met at home - apart from in the very end stages? Not sure how any of this would be funded either, we are applying for CHC funding but won't hold our breath! thanks

Have you been in touch with the MSA Trust and spoken to one of their nurses. I would suggest that as a first step and also their welfare advisor will help with CHC funding as well. I hope they can help. Take care, Ian

thanks Yanno. I've spoken in the past to Sam Fitzgerald and she's given us good information about CHC funding. My son is helping me negotiate this. As my husband is being discharged to a nursing home I believe he doesn't have to go through the screening part of the application but goes straight on to being fully assessed. It's early days, but we'll see what happens next. I believe the MSA Trust nurse who knows us a bit is on holiday until Monday, so I'll try and contact her again then. Thanks for your reply.

Not for nursing care but if you need equipment, try the council's OT service. They provided us with hoists, slings, day chairs and shower chairs. While our local Macmillan organised a hospital bed. These were essential for him to be able to remain living at home and was long before my husband needed end of life care. In his last few months, Macmillan arranged emergency CHC funding (approved within 24 hours).

thanks so much. yes we have an OT who can sort out any equipment for my husband. its the nursing care that's going to be difficult I think. Trying to take one day at a time. All the best.
