Runny nose after every meal

Hi all, My husband has MSA and he has a runny nose after everything he eats. He has tried anti-histamines but they don't make a difference. Is this something usual that comes with MSA and would anyone know what may cause it? We have asked neurologists but they don't have a clear answer. Thank you.

I did a search and AI answer says although not a typical symptom the autonomic dysfunction can affect nasal secretions causing a running nose. Do an internet search, I have seen it before on different sites. Hugs and prayers for you and your husband.

This may be a sign he is aspirating food into his lungs which can lead to pneumonia. A modified barium swallow study by a speech language pathologist would be able to see if this is the case.

i too have this trouble. no one can answer it. have been given azelastine and ipratropium bromide, neither of which helps more than a bit. frankly, since every time i mention it i get that 'blank stare' i've given up; just ask for extra napkins when out.

This happens to me when I use a computer for too long. But besides the runny nose, I also get a lot of tears and burning eyes!

Hello , yes my husband has had a runny nose for sometime now and his consultant too doesn't have any answers ,but it's obviously one of the many symptoms that comes with the condition .( for example I lost my sense of taste and smell in the earlier years of covid and this was then added to list of symptoms )

Hello. My husband often has a severely runny nose. I did my own research when we still thought he had Parkinson’s. 20% of Patients with PD get it apparently. Eventually got neuro nurse to prescribe Ipratropium bromide nasal spray which does reduce it when used 3x a day. He’s recently been prescribed glycopyrronium liquid at night to help with drool and we think it might help a bit with the nose too.

It is worth trying as my husband’s nose used to run like a tap, into his food etc and it has improved although not a miracle cure.

Good luck 😊

Jon had this, we used atropine drops taken orally and then hyoscine patches worn behind the ear worked a treat!
