Anxiety over Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

Hello everyone, I looked on patient portal after bloods done. Carbon dioxide is low at20 and Anion Gap is high at 20 on the Metabolic Panel. Everything else is normal and have an appointment very late tomorrow with PCP. Meanwhile I contacted hem/onc but did not hear back and Dr. Google has concerned me. I didn’t realize when you fasted you could have water but never affected tests before. I have ET, 500 mg per day of HU. Has anyone experienced this problem. If so what was the reason and treatment.

Best to all of you,

Janet

I would not worry too much about a single lab result, but would follow up. It is worth noting that dehydration can affect lab results, including these. It is important in general for people with MPNs to maintain good hydration. It is particularly important when taking HU. Hydration is very important in managing the toxicity associated with HU. Note that renal impairment is one of the adverse effects associated with HU. Dehydration is also not good for renal function. Suggest that you repeat the CMP when you are well hydrated. Your MPN care team can review the situation with you and provide the best guidance.

All the best.
