Private medical cover

Hi all,

I live in the UK, have ET and was diagnosed in 2017, has anyone been able to get private medical cover? If so with whom?

I tried a few years ago through Vitality with my husband through his work, he was accepted but I wasn’t.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you :)

I do have PMI through my workplace, as it is not underwritten, but I doubt ET would be covered as it is a chronic disease. I have used it for other things though. I could have bought PMI through AXA but did not as anything related to ET would be excluded and I felt they could claim most things were related to ET so not worth the money.

I think Staysure only give you private medical cover when your travelling. I have ET with no other complications but when I went on Hydroxycarbamide Staysure would not cover me for travel insurance.

Yeah I’ve never had any issues with travel insurance and I usually use Coverwise,, their prices are good too! I’m looking for private medical/health insurance. I am aware that I wouldn’t get covered for my ET but as I say I tried alongside my husband through his work and they refused me.

I have just had a refusal from Staysure . I have had ET for 7 years and it is well managed. I also have a low grade cancer which is also well managed. The trouble is you can only answer yes or no to questions so there’s no chance of a discussion.

I had private medical cover through work when I was diagnosed with ET but after a couple of years they excluded it on the basis it had become a chronic condition. Actually good news for me, as I moved from a private general haematologist to a specialist NHS team, who are much more on the ball about monitoring and treating MPNs.

You might be able to get cover if you agreed to exclude your ET and possibly other pre-existing conditions.

Thank you for your reply, I declared my ET and disclosed my medical history for another investigation I was going through but they didn’t even give me an option, just refused to give me any cover. It was a couple of years ago so maybe I’ll just have to try again. I don’t have any issues with my MPN team, they are fantastic and wouldn’t want to change them but would just be nice to have cover incase anything else happened, especially with the state of the NHS now!

Try contacting the Nlood CancerUK team. They advised me in the past. Very knowledgeable and helpful
