Critical Illness cover and Polycythemia Vera

My husband was diagnosed with PV a year ago. I glanced at the Aviva policy at the time a year ago and saw that PV was classed as pre-malignant. Our policy was taken out in 2005 - I was wondering will the ABI new definition apply to an older policy and what are the chances of claiming on the Critical Illness cover? Thanks in advance

It strikes me that for Aviva to treat you less well for paying for longer would be ridiculous!

Go for it. You have nothing to lose after all.

Thanks for your reply, we are going to give it a go. It would be good to know if anyone has been successful claiming from Aviva with a similar length of policy!

There are people on here who have succeeded with Aviva. Can't say about age of policies though.

I have ET and was successful with a claim to Aviva a few months ago.

When you phone make sure that you speak to the Claims Team directly, rather than a Customer Services adviser. I found the Claims Team very helpful. Try to have all of the relevant information regarding the condition available, because when I phoned they went through my dates of diagnosis and treatment to date.

It may depend upon the Terms of your policy as definitions change all of the time, however they do back date claims, so hopefully you be successful.

Good luck.

Hi I took out a policy in1999 with aviva which was life insurance but also included critical illness. I had no problem with claiming and was paid out in 6 weeks. A nice surprise as I didn't know I had critical illness cover until i read on the site to check our policies to see if it was included. Good luck.

That’s good to know... Im feeling more hopeful. Thanks for your reply.

Hi TheFog,

I hope you were successful in your claim. PV is now classified as a cancer by WHO, so I hope this will help your case. If you need any assistance in an appeal or where to go for more help should you be denied, please don't hesitate to get in touch at advocacy@leukaemiacare.org.uk.

From what I've read on other forums, some people have been successful at claiming for policies pre-2007 ABI update.

My partner was diagnosed with ET JAK2+ in November and we hadn't even thought about claiming until it was suggested to us last week.

We have two policies and have now put in claims to Aviva and Zurich, having just sent off the supporting paperwork about diagnosis etc. Its been really encouraging to read of the many success stories on the forum. There are several posts / comments relating to Aviva though I haven't heard of anyone claiming on a Zurich policy. We're hoping that all the insurance policies follow the ABI guidance; in which case our claim should be successful. As with everyone, a successful claim would make such a difference to our lives and remove a lot of the anxiety associated with the diagnosis. We are worried there will be some loophole. Anyone with any success stories for Zurich would be very helpful!

Best of luck on your claim; fingers crossed.

Well, got through to Aviva eventually and now waiting for them to phone back tomorrow as we had to make an appointment to answer some questions on the phone. Apparently they will then send the form out. Will keep you all informed how we get on! Thanks for all the replies.

Our insurance people filled our forms out and we just added to it.My husband's PV has stopped him getting some jobs away because he needed regularly blood tests etc hospital appointments.

We added all this to the claim form .
