Hi, I have ET and also had a partial nephrectomy following a routine scan last year, which identified a tumour on my left kidney.I had a biopsy and thankfully the tumour was an oncocytoma (benign). However, it was decided to remove it as the surgeon said that it could still contain cancer cells.

The op went well but unfortunately I suffered a pneumothorax post surgery. The stomach is inflated with gas to make it easier to get access to the tumour and gas escaped into my chest cavity causing a partial lung collapse. I must stress that this is extremely rare!!

I had a few extra days in hospital but am now fully recovered.

If you need any further information please let me know.

The op took 4-5 hours and was done by robotics. Just a few small scars in the abdomen, nothing horrendous.I'm not actually sure if there was any discussions between haematologists and the surgeon, however, I was told to carry on taking hydroxycarbamide and daily low dose aspirin.

I think hospital stay should be about 3 days or so, mine was 5 due to problems I mentioned before.

Hi , I had a partial nephrectomy in 2020. I had a 4 cm malignant tumour discovered incidentally as we were searching for a reason for my high platelets. ( 1.1 million at the time ) I was not diagnosed as having ET when I had my surgery . It was a 4 hour extensive surgery due to the position of my tumour and was not done robotically . I was in the hospital for 5 days . It was during the height of the Covid pandemic so I was very isolated . Thank goodness for FaceTime ! I have a 20 cm diagonal scar on my right side . I will not lie, the recovery was painful especially in the first two weeks . The surgeons were aware I had high platelets so I received blood thinner shots for two days after surgery . But everything went well . Incidentally , I also have surgery next week like you ( on the 19th a day after yours) to remove an ovary with a tumor in it . During my preop appointment last week , the surgeon said it will be laparoscopic so will only involve 3 small cuts and that the recovery should only take 2 weeks . I was also told to stop taking aspirin and Hydroxyurea 5 days prior to surgery . (I was not on meds before my kidney surgery .) I’m wishing you all the best and a speedy recovery ! 🤞🙏🏻 if you have any questions feel free to contact me .

The worst is over ! Glad you’re slowly recovering . You’ll feel much better in another couple weeks . Was your tumor benign ? I’m also doing very well after my robotic surgery . I’m able to walk very well so that helps with moving that blood around . Just waiting till pathology comes back in a month, but it looked benign 🤞. Stay well and speedy recovery !

Yes kidney Tumors are rarely benign I was told too by my nephrologist. . It’s been 3 years since mine was removed and I am being followed every half year by a full torso ultrasound etc . For the next 5 years . I keeps my mind totally at ease ! I’m so happy you had yours removed ! 🤞
