Hello all- I have been on Hydroxyurea for my ET for 3 years and have recently started bruising quite a bit even though I have been on Plavix and aspirin for 3 years as well. None of my doctors have an answer which is really frustrating as I look like I have been beat up because the bruising is so bad. Could it be from hydroxyurea? The only new medicine I am taking is a statin. I was switched from 40 mg of Lipitor to 40 mg of Crestor because of plaque issues.

Hi am on 2 aspirin a day and I bruise quite easily too.
it says bruising is a symptom of PV, but I don’t believe that. I never had any bruising at all until i started taking aspirin
Yes am same bruising just appear from now where on my body got bit worser when updose to 2 a day its the aspirin .x
I also switched from Lipitor to Crestor and I had brushing before the switch. I think it is from both the aspirin and HU. Hydrea seemed to thin not only my hair, nails but also my skin.
if you take blood thinner like aspirin you will find you bruise easily . I do too .
Are your platelets within the normal range? My wife bruises easily if very high or very low!
when I took daily aspirin I had lots of bruises. Now I just take ½ aspirin every third day , which the MPN specialist was happy with, esp as I have no history of clots and am fit and well. No bruises since cutting down the aspirin.
I have the same thing. The only thing that I've noticed is that the tendency to bruise seems to come and go and that I have periods where it is less noticeable.
bruising usually comes from blood that is too thin. When was your last blood test??
you are actually taking two new medicines! You should never make changes that quickly and only one medicine at a time, so you can know what is causing the problem. Changing two things at once or within a short time is not advisable, unless it’s an emergency.
If you are on statins, please make sure that you are taking CoQ 10 every single day. Statins deplete your body of the enzyme and cause, weakness in every organ and muscle and cognitive problems. CoQ10 makes sure that every single cell in our body works at a proper speed, and that of course is the Alpha and Omega of our energy. Most of the energy we use is for our brain and our heart.
I personally don’t believe in reducing lipids, unless it’s a huge problem. It’s better to increase the omega-3 and reduce the omega 6. Optimal is to have a 1-3 ratio of omega-3 to omega-6. As far as I am informed, the British eat a 1 to 20 ratio and the Americans, a 1 to 25 ratio of omega 3-6. That is a terrible imbalance of unsaturated versus saturated fats.
another way to get the lipids down into the bloodstream is to get enough exercise.
The most important point is to check with your MP and specialist about all these changes
you may look at drugs.com for excellent information regarding deficits that are being caused by any, and all medications that you are taking, including aspirin and then replenish them with good supplements. You can also check for side-effects and cross affect between the different drugs. If you are taking more than three, it is very challenging for the body! I try to do everything as naturally as possible, and I was able to get rid of five different medications that I was taking that were not really necessary. I am now much healthier and only take what I absolutely need. I eat an excellent anti-inflammatory diet, drink plenty of water, go on walks and a light exercise which is not too much for me and I sleep well.

Thank you Anag ! The only new medicine change was the Crestor. Looking at the response from Hunter, I think maybe it is the Crestor. When I stated I recently started bruising after being on Plavix and aspirin for 3 years, I wasn’t clear. I have EXTREME bruising all over my body. Unfortunately my MPN Specialist at MD Anderson pretty much blew me off and said it was the Plavix and aspirin. I don’t believe it. I see 8 doctors and take 7 different prescriptions. I really appreciate everyone’s responses and I will request being taken off Crestor and look into some better alternatives.
When I sent the other note, I only checked a few interactions. Suggest checking all of the medications and supplements you are taking. There can also be a negative synergy when taking multiple types of medications that may not be apparent on most drug interaction checks.
Like you, I also see a bunch of different "ologists." No matter how great they are, they simply cannot know about all of the potential drug interactions. That is why I always check myself. I also consult with a pharmacist (in addition to the docs) when I have any questions.
While the Plavix-Aspirin combination is the most likely suspect, the timing of the bruising would make anyone suspicious about the Crestor even though hemorrhaging does not flag as an issue.

wow. Med scape is great. I haven’t been feeling well for 10 days. Just found that the lithium I just started taking causes serious cns interactions with my Besremi.
Lighter interactions are with levothytoxin. I always take bioidentical thyroid hormone, but I needed to increase my dosage slightly so I added 25mcg of the levothyroxin. Either that or lithium or both are the culprit!
I usually check meds and supplements thoroughly, but wasn’t able to find too much about besremi, which I started in October. Medscape has a long list! Thank you!

Aspirin and Plavix (clopidogrel) are both antiplatelet medications. Both come with a risk of increased hemorrhage (bleeding/bruising). Taken together, there is an increased risk due to potentiation. There is a known drug interaction with aspirin and clopidogrel.
Monitor/Modify Tx aspirin + clopidogrel monitor bleeding s/sx: combo may incr. risk of GI or other bleeding, incl. life-threatening (additive effects) epocrates.com/online/intera...
In addition there is this interaction to be aware of.
Monitor/Modify Tx rosuvastatin + clopidogrel monitor CK, myopathy sx: combo may incr. rosuvastatin levels, risk of myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, other adverse effects (hepatic transport inhibited)
Your care team is aware of these drug interactions and should be working with you to follow a proper monitoring protocol. Modification to the treatment protocol would be based on the occurrence of adverse reactions like significant hemorrhaging (e.g., significant unexplained bruising).
Suggest you consult with your MPN care tam about the adverse effects you are experiencing. You have a valid concern that needs to be addressed. If you find the response unsatisfactory, then a second opinion is indicated, preferably from a MPN Specialist.

so sorry I have no answers, it happened to me for a short while and I was instructed to stop taking tumeric.
My Mom had severe arthritis and only took aspirin for it. It was many years before she started bruising badly. So it could be the cumulative effect of the aspirin.
Aspirin . I never bruised until they put me on aspirin. I am on Peg Interferon & bruise at slightest knock . I rub Arnica on it immediately it works . Always have a tube around me 👍 Julia
