Constipation problems!

Hi

New ET patient here. Diagnosed in January. Platelets around 606. For now on low doses of Aspirin. I changed my life drastically. Stoped smoking and drinking. Exercising as usual. Also began intermittent fasting ( 12 hours fasting from 6pm to 6 am). For now no majot symptoms just a ,little fatigue later in the day. But I have problem with constipation and hard stool. Can this be from Aspirin or from body adapting to fasting? Anyone experienced this? Also have bleeding gums sometimes. Thx

Hi. It sounds you have made a few lifestyle changes.. check how much water you are drinking, ideally 2 litres on top of your other drinks like tea and coffee.. also 5 a day and soluble Fibre can make a big difference . If tou still struggle it might be worth seeing a dietician for them to help you.

Hi, congrats on your lifestyle changes, sounds a positive way forward. I’m doing something similar. I have ET and bleeding gums always a problem for me. I’m not sure there’s a lot we can do about it, or if there is I haven’t found the answer yet! Constipation, I am also with you on this one, I hadn’t linked it to ET. I drink prune juice regularly and there is something called Lactulose that is very effective that you can buy at chemist (in UK). Hope that helps. X

agree with the others about the water. I increased my water intake and I take miralax like every other day. Those two things have really helped as I have always had issues.

I've dealt with constipation since I was diagnosed with ET. I thought my meds (Hydrea) were the problem and that could have been the case. Stool softeners, fiber supplements and prune juice didn't really help and laxatives were too much for me so I needed a balance. It wasn't until recently when I started to take PURIUM probiotics and their plant based shake every morning that I noticed a change. Not a sales pitch, just works for me. After about two months I was pretty regular again. Oh and lots of water of course. Good luck!

For me it is the hydroxy. I take Metamucil, eat shredded wheat for breakfast, and drink a couple liters of water every day. I also walk every day for about 45 minutes.

Hi Myers,

You could drink prune juice for constipation.

It also rich in potassium and iron.

Hopeful it may help to your constipation

Thank you all for great words of wisdom as always. I will stack myself up with prune juice for sure. Friend of mine also gave me some great advice. Baking soda really helps. Just mix it in warm water and that really does the trick.
