Hi, my father was diagnosed with a "blood cancer" about a year ago. Unfortunately he or my mother do not hear very well (and may have gotten it wrong) and it was only this year when my father's platelets started to go up and he was getting sicker, he went to a specialist and they told him he had Thrombocytosis. He has been on medication and going back to the doctors every 3 weeks for blood tests and this week the doctors OWN physicians assistant told him "I don't know who told you you had Thrombocytosis or cancer, but you don't". At this point he is so tired and sick half the time we just want to get the right diagnosis. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good Hematologist in Boston? He is going to a doctor in Worcester and right new just needs a second opinion.
Thank you for any advise or info you may have.

it sounds like someone diagnosed your Father with Essential Thrombocythemia, which is a form of blood cancer (Myeloproliferative Neoplasm). It is not at all clear why he would be getting conflicting information. However, MPNs are rare disorders. Unfortunately. many hematologists (and their assistants) are not very knowledgeable about them. That is why it is so important to see a MPN Specialist, This is the only way to ensure a proper diagnosis and optimal care plan for MPNs.
From Hunter's list, I chose Dr. Gabriella Hobbs, Massachusetts General Hospital. We went to Waltham, MA. She's an MPN specialist and told me to call any time, I am following a Heme in RI. You will love the cancer center at MGH, I promise!
