Just wondering from those who have had cataract surgery and taking aspirin and blood thinners, were you told to stop these prior to surgery. Your input would be appreciated. Thanks so much!!

Hi buggerbear, I had laser treatment to relieve the pressure in both my eyes two years ago, although I had bleeds in both eyes it was totally fine, before op they told me not to stop medication, and bloods were all fine afterwards, not the same as cataracts I know but should all be fine.If you are unsure speak with your Haematologist or Nurse, but rest assured it should be alright.

Thank you Jean! My nurse told me to just check with the Ophthalmologist, who has never heard of MPN's so I was just a little concerned. Appreciate your good wishes!!!

I had successful laser treatment to eye with problem following cataract surgery.I am well monitored on Warfarin and Hydroxycarbomide- my INR was within target so no stopping of medication and treatment carried out swiftly and painlessly.

Good luck!

Am signed up and waiting for the op dates. Am on Edoxaban blood thinner. Told by Haem Consultant that I don’t have to stop it for cataract ops.

Just got a date for my first cataract op Feb 28 and a PCR on 25 and then self isolate til the surgery. Hope second eye is not too long after the first one. Because of both blood and heart probs an anaesthetist will be there too. My Optician wanted me to be treated at the hospital which has all my records. Am grateful for that rather than having to go to one of the private Clinics solely doing cataracts which the NHS is using.

Sounds like they are taking good care of you and good luck to you!! Think the hospital would be the very best place to have it done!!

Hi, I have had cataracts in both my eyes and had laser treatment to remove the original lens and replace with artificial ones. These frosted over within 3 years so I had to have further laser treatment on both eyes. I have PV and take HU and aspirin daily. Both proceedures were fine - I didn't have to alter my medication at all. Eyesight fine now!

Morning Turfbeg! Wow, haven't heard of eyes frosting over after cataract surgery, but glad the last two laser treatments did the trick. Thank you for the info about not stopping your meds. I am scared but hopefully will be able to see again!

Hi Buggerbear, I hope it goes well for you when you have the procedure, with regards to your medication, it might be worth asking the ophthalmologist to liaise with your haematologist for advice. Best wishes, Maz

Thank you Maz for the well wishes!! The NP at the Oncology Clinic says check with the ophthalmologist, and the ophthalmologist says vice versa......such a dilemma but I am a worry wart!

such a dilemma, I would contact your haematology nurse specialist again and say that you are concerned about this. Maz

Prof Harrison said I do not need to stop Edoxaban before a cataract op. Hope this helps.

Hi Buggerbear, I had two cataract surgeries last month. The hospital wanted me to stop my baby aspirin but were happy to accept my refusal to do so which my PCP approved. No bleeding and very successful results. Good luck to you!Ellen
