Taking Vitamin D with ET

Morning all, thought I would ask this question of you knowledgeable peeps.

Just wondering if it’s alright to use a 10mcg Vitamin D spray into your mouth while taking Hydroxycarbamide, this way it misses the stomach which I have had problems with when taking in Tablet form the spray goes straight into the bloodstream.

Tried calling my Haematology nurse last week but know that her hours have been changed due to Covid so not heard anything as yet, so thought I would put it to yourselves.

I do have a very good diet and through the summer I am always out in the garden which is beneficial and a good way of getting Vitamin D from the sunshine 🌞 but these last few days it has now gone cold and very wet.

Two recent studies have highlighted its potential significance in Covid 19 those hospitalised with the infection and have low levels of Vitamin D are more likely to suffer life threatening complications. Mine last winter went low so considering the spray.

Keep smiling

I also took Vit D when I was on HU. No issues I am aware of. Vit. D deficiency does have significant risks beyond COVID, so it is important to address. By all means let the provider know about this or anything else you take.

Hi Jean, you really do need to check with your haematologist or nurse specialist, and perhaps your GP as you have had problems with taking it in tablet form, just to be on the safe side. Best wishes, Maz

Hi Maz, just heard from one of my Haematology nurses, they have said it’s alright to take and the spray will be better goes straight into the blood stream he also said, as we could be prone to skin cancer when out in the sun and taking Hydroxycarbamide this is the next best way to get the vitamin into our bodies without harm especially through autumn and winter, also to make sure that I eat foods that have natural occurring vitamin D as well which I do, so going to give it a try as bloods have all come down and are all in the normal range well that was three weeks ago when I saw my Haematologist.

Hi

I have been prescribed vitamin D for osteopenia and the consultants have been fully aware when prescribing hydroxycarbamide. Therefore I think it’s safe for you carry on without concern.

Hope you keep well

Hi Jean, I have PV and take Hydroxy when I said to my haematologist that I was always tired he said take Vit D, and walked out of the room before I could question him. So I do not sure it makes any difference to the tiredness though

Keep well

I am currently taking the gel caps for covid. But fyi there is some information out there that suggests vit d can cause MF to advance. I don't know if it causes ET to advance though.
