In this cohort study conducted at two centers in Wuhan, China, the authors followed a cohort of 128 hospitalized individuals with hematological cancers and 226 healthcare providers during the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 was diagnosed in 13 of the patients with hematological cancer and 16 of the healthcare personnel. There were no differences in the baseline characteristics of patients with hematological cancers who did or did not develop COVID-19. The COVID-19 case rate was comparable among hospitalized patients with hematological cancers and healthcare providers. However, patients with hematological cancers had more severe disease. The case fatality rate was 62% in patients with hematological cancer versus 0% in healthcare workers.
Hospitalized patients with hematological cancers are at risk for severe disease if infected with COVID-19, but no obvious risk factors were identified. These patients should have protective isolation and increased surveillance.
