New study released: Factors associated with COVID-19

We have quantified a range of clinical risk factors for death from COVID-19, some of which were not previously well characterised, in the largest cohort study conducted by any country to date.

doi.org/10.1101/2020.05.06....

See attached image - shows 'hematological malignancies' as the worst offender after age. Curious if this would include MPNs??

Anyhow, caution is warranted for us all.

I think our conditions are considered chronic rather than malignant. But as you say, caution should be our watchword.

I am not an expert but it seems to be yet another list of generic groupings and no real analysis or clarity

The data in the report on Covid and ethnic minorities and also on poverty factors is for me lacking and needs more exploration But yes caution is needed and l look forward to the next webinar for information relevant and applicable to us and our myriad of conditions

I don’t understand it? My Heamatologist told me I didn’t need to shield, my rheumatologist said I did, I have RA as well as PV, yet RA is very low on the hazard ratio!

My pleasure- just following the lead of others here. Not sure it is particularly relevant for us folks with MPNs as friendofpiglet points out that MPNs are more chronic rather than malignant. But we cant be too careful in these times especially as the world reopens....I expect a big surge ahead of new cases and by the fall perhaps new symptoms as the virus mutates.

Interestingly, and I may be misinterpreting the chart, but it seems our risk is reduced if we are hypertensive smokers in our 40s who have recovered from cancer 4 or 5 years ago.......

MPNs are chronic malignancies. No cancers are non-malignant. Rumours can be malignant or benign. Benign tumours are not cancer.

That makes sense to me osidge - though I’m guessing there werent MPN classified folks in this study. I may dig a bit more in OPEN safe data if its free to see if I can tease out more what exactly a hematological malignancy is in their definition- the paper certainly didnt further clarify.

I don't understand that either. But bearing in mind how long it took to get the shielding letters, in the end it's all down to us.

Blood cancer is listed in the government's advice on who is vulnerable. That is because they still don't know enough about the blood cancer and they don't know enough about the virus either.

We might be safe to mix with people but who among the elderly wants to take the risk? I don't think my GP understands what I've got; she thinks I have anaemia, so I am not about to get into a discussion with her, even though my letter was signed by her!
