Hi Guys, did anyone in Scotland experience a Covid type illness in October/November/December last year?
I know my husband, myself, daughter had high temperatures and a dry cough. My grandkids were unwell for a far shorter time, the eldest having very mild symptoms. I was so bad with a 40+C temp for about 5 days, my hubby had to call the doc in. Despite taking regular paracetamol, my temp wouldn’t come down below 38C. I had no infections like ear, throat, etc but my chest was tight and was sitting up to try and sleep.
A pharmacist has also expressed an opinion that this area of the country (north east) had Covid 19 symptoms at that time as he was inundated with customers with families with the same symptoms.
It may have been a big coincidence that the two main symptoms of what we had and Covid 19 were identical but I do wonder. If the antibody tests become available, my hubby and I will definitely be self-testing as this is the only way we will know for sure. It was certainly the most I’ll I have been that I can remember.
Hope you are all as well as you can be. Kindest regards Aime xx😻😻
PS - we are, of course, still following all the covid19 guidelines.

Both mum and I did and still are I went to the GP first it must have been around Sept/Oct she took a swab and told me to keep taking my co-codamol which I take due to botched brain op which left me with permanent back pain she told me it was virus mum went up and she was told the same thing but take paracetmol as it was virus both our coughs were getting worse we put it down to being run down with all the running back and forward visiting my dad in hospital constantly but my cough was getting worse and hoarse so managed to get another appointment but with different Dr, she asked me to look at back off throat bit I felt it coming I let out a chesty cough and without hesitating she gave me a five- day course off antibiotics we still are not any better so mum phoned the GP this week and explained we were getting worried the clinician looked at both our notes and said we were run down with running back and forward while dad was in hospital and we have stress that is why we cannot shake it off
I was ill over Christmas. Had symptoms consistent with Covid-19, Cough, Temperature....the Cough took about 3 weeks to go. Generally felt aches and pains but not sneezing and all that.
What I would say though is for almost every winter (and not always winters) i have managed to get a bug thats consistent with (some) Covid-19 symptoms so while i wouldnt discount it because im not an expert, my non expert view is i probably had one of those other bugs that always seem to come around each year,
Would i be interested in an anti body test? yes absolutely but unless anyone can say to me otherwise them im 100% I havent had nor anyone else in the UK before the dates the government are saying.
I have seen quite a few people on forums claiming they have heard from a source that it was here before, and maybe the government do know but if they do and arent saying then thats 100% the right thing to do in my opinion, we have already seen that people cant do as asked, people failing to keep to the rules yesterday again....if there was a growing feeling amongst those in the population that it had been here then there might be those who seem to know better just say 'yeah i had it im off out'.
Hi Paul, thank you for your sensible reply. The symptoms I had were unlike other viruses, etc I've had because of the high temp which refused to budge below 38C, despite max paracetamol and the dry cough. My doc could not find a reason to give me antibiotics which is unusual with normal viruses that I do occasionally take as they would normally progress, causing infection in the throat, chest or sinuses.
I still would not take any chances and following the guidelines because not to do so would be extremely selfish. I'm hoping I get the opportunity to do an antibody test in the future.
This is a very interesting question: has CoViD19 been around for longer than we think? Just recently I read a posting by a woman on another forum who thought that she and other people she knew might have had a CoViD19-like illness late in 2019 - but they were in the South of England rather than Scotland (Devon and West Sussex were mentioned). I've begun to wonder about my father, who died in hospital in West Sussex in mid November. He was 87 and had various health problems but it was striking the way I was told rather suddenly that his pneumonia was no longer responding to antibiotics (he was put on "end-of-life care" and died a few days later): had the original bacterial pneumonia become complicated by a viral pneumonia and could that have been connected to CoViD19? I shall never know ...
My brother has just 'phoned me and mentioned a story he'd heard last year in the media about a school in Somerset, which was cleaned before Christmas because a lot of the children all became ill at the same time with 'flu'-like symptoms ...
Yes, it’s certainly an intriguing thought. It was definitely an unusual illness, particularly the high temperature 40-41C which I struggled with for 4 days before having to ask for a house call from my gp as my legs couldn’t carry me further than the distance from the couch to the toilet. I was virtually crawling. I think the last time a gp came out to see me was probably about 40 years ago! It was scary that paracetamol was only taking my temp down to 38C for a short time and then it was shooting back up again and I’m the one in the family who generally does not get flu or colds!
Not a nice experience . Hope everyone stays away from covid19. Kindest regards Aime xx😻😻
Did you experience a partial loss of your sense of taste or smell? This is not a definitive symptom of the CoViD19-related illnesses but it is one that has been widely mentioned.
Yes I did but at the time put it down to the dry cough affecting all my airways including my nose and throat. I lost my appetite too. Kind regards Aime x😻
I don’t know if the story I’ve heard is true but amongst some of the Chinese community, they were calling covid19 the Scottish virus and blaming relatives who had been visiting China in December and January for taking the virus from Scotland to China. It may just be speculation but I will certainly look out for antibody tests becoming available. I will also be following all the government guidelines to the letter, just in case the pre Christmas virus is a red herring!
Stay well and safe everyone. Kind regards Aime xx😻😻
This was the flu season too
I would be surprised as the pandemic started in Wuhan and the first case was reported In Wuhan, China, in late December.
Also the source has been traced to Wuhan wet market
Interesting.. yes I’m in North East Scotland had all the symptoms over Christmas/New Year. Luckily I was by myself so was isolating.in bed for 2 weeks . but it wasn’t like any flu I’ve had before.. and yes had my flu jab as normal.. could be coincidence. But like you would like a test and maybe in time all people that think they’ve had it get tested .. as they could think they are now immune when not. A long way off for that I think .
