Low Dose Aspirin

I have ET/MPL on Peg 45 mcg. I was told to take low dose Aspirin 75mg. I had quite a sever reaction once when I took 500mg, but was told to I had take 75 mg. Someone suggested gastro resistant Aspirin does this thin the blood as well as normal Aspirin?

Hello Raphael - as far as I know it does exactly the same as a blood thinner, but the coating protects your stomach. I am also on 75mg as are many on here (there appears to be a bit of an ‘issue’ with supplies of enteric coated but my local Weldrakes let me buy from their dispensary stock) - if aspirin causes problems for you, your haem should be able to come up with an alternative. Best Anne-Marie.

Hi,

Low dose enteric coated asprin is widely used to reduce the risk of blood clots but if you've had a severe reaction to asprin in the past you must speak to your doctor about this before taking any more, even a low dose.

The NHS website has some useful information.

Thank you, I have been talking low dose Aspirin, was told to by my Haematologist despite previous bad reaction to 500mg. Aspirin. I was told the benefits outway the risk. But I’m wondering if I will get less stomach ache with enteric coated Aspirin. Thank you for responding.

Should do, especially if you take it immediately after eating.

Having suggested you take your asprin immediately after eating, as advised on the NHS website I've come across a report that suggests a different approach.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/277...

Sometimes its hard to know what to do for the best but I guess you can try it at different times to see what is best for you.

There are some people on the forum who take clopidogrel as an alternative to aspirin.

I find the enteric coated aspirin much better. Has exactly the same effect as non enteric coated but gentler on the stomach.

I’m not sure what your ‘severe’ reaction was - although it happened at much higher doses. There are other options.

In terms of supply, enteric coated aspirin appears to be still available on the UK high street but probably worth stocking up. Paracetamol in short supply. Had to go from shop to shop including my ‘local’ supermarket branches to stock up for the family. (Hope no one was tailing me, don’t want to get a reputation :)))) )

Hi Raphael,

I have ET CALR.

Yes. Definitely do the gastroresistant aspirin. Works the same.

Which reaction did you have? Just stomach?

I couldn’t take aspirin at first at all, since I had a histamine intolerance. I got rid of that and other immune problems by fixing my leaky gut. Also, I should be taking 100mg aspirin, but take only 50 and Substitute with 180mg of ginkgo (3x 60mg) daily. Keeps my blood nice and flowing and I have a lower chemical burden on my system.

Also, when I had a massive nose bleed a year ago (blood too thin- my grandmother died in her sleep from a massive nose bleed), I stopped both immediately and the ginkgo was gone in 9-12 hours. Aspirin takes up to 7 days. So, we can adjust better. Ask your haemo or a holistic doctor. Might help you more.

Hope to have helped.
