Hi everyone… I’m considering replacing my daily low dose aspirin with turmeric…. Has anyone done this and how much turmeric should I take in a supplement?

Turmeric instead of low dose daily aspirin
In my experience Turmeric would not have enough of blood thinning effect to replace aspirin for anti-platelet therapy. It is very effective as an anti-inflammatory agent. My experience is that it works better for this than any NSAID I ever took. While it might have a mild potentiating effect on the aspirin, it was not a problem for me.
Dosing is a bit problematic as it depends in which formulation you use. Curcumin, the active ingredient in Turmeric, does not pass readily into the bloodstream. It needs help. One approach is to include black pepper extract (piperine). There are other formulations used to make the curcumin bioavailable. I use a formulation called CurcuWIN that my Integrative Medicine doc recommends. I take 550mg 2x/day.
Note - I also take a reduced dose of aspirin (40.5mg) which seems to be the right dose for me.
All the best.
What if we take curcumin natural powder??
I think it would depend on the formulation. It would ne a great question for an Integrative Med doc or another health professional with the right expertise.
We don't have integrative med doc in my country! I wil see..
Maybe a Naturalist or someone who knows how bioavailable the formulation is.
Trying turmeric today, with my various conditions, I was using aspirin to relieve pressure on the brain from a bad epileptic seizure, although prescribed aspirin I was told later it could conflict with my medications I am taking for epilepsy, high blood pressure and diabetes 2. Talking to a medical friend or indeed friends and full permission of one of my medical specialists I have the go ahead, after being off the Aspirin for 6 weeks.🤞
Incontinent!😤
Actually been using it for about five weeks, cranium hot and scratchy under the hairline, my incontinence is probably due to the fact I swapped the cod liver oil tablets with the turmeric freeze dried 350 tablets, my skull equilibrium has improved dramatically, able to almost use skull normally, big relief, my Schwannomatosis specialist is pleased with my progress and agrees switching from aspirin to turmeric! Noticed very recently skin is beginning to get rough and I bleed easily? 😗
Hi Hunter, how do you split your aspirin? I’ve been okayed by my hematologist to take 40mg daily aspirin but have a hard time splitting the aspirins into equal parts.
I use a pill splitter. Note that I am also splitting the chewable form.
The question of using turmeric and curcumin came up at last week’s MPN Voice webinar. And the advice was very clear. There simply isn’t the evidence to support the use of either and while, after talking to your haem, you may wish to add it to your supplement intake, it should definitely never be used to replace prescribed medication.
I am 61 and have Jak 2 ET and platelets kept at around 550 for last 3 years. I take just 37.5mg (half) aspirin plus a tablespoon of organic tumeric powder over a day plus tablespoon organic ground flax seed & half teaspoon reishi mushroom powder plus B12. Am whole food plant based vegan too. I seem pretty well so far, apart from some fatigue. Wouldn't advise stopping aspirin completely though. Good luck.
Hi Keiks, For the first 2 years, with platelets hovering around a million, I only tried aspirin, but that led to a lot of bleeding so I stopped it. Have been eating veganic, taking loadsa fresh turmeric with just about everything, along with a ton of garlic and ginger. Grated on salads, chopped or grated in stir fried, powdered to add to organic hummus and a few tablets a day, too. Oh and a glass of red wine a day, which I have continued since starting the Peg.
Until Peg, only symptoms were the usual FFF. Fatigue, feebleness and fragility. Peg is another story that I am working on.
I looked into the benefits of tumeric supplement about a year ago and had mixed responses both from the people on this forum and the professionals. I take hydrea and asprin. The pharmacist advised to check with my doctor, and the MPN specialist said I could try any supplements but to introduce them one at a time. I also heard the question asked last week on the webinar. However, having listened to a talk from Angela Fleischman on the symptoms of MPNs she is in favour of a tumeric supplement along with a Mediterranean diet and exercise. So perhaps these things don't help with blood counts but if they relieve itching and fatigue then perhaps try for yourself. I take Tumeric capsules bought from superdrug and also follow a Mediterranean diet.
Hi Not tried this but would be very interested to hear any thoughts on this as it seems to be a better health option than aspirin.
good advice from Hunter 5582 though....
I’ve been taking 50mg aspirin with 3 capsules turmeric/curcumin daily. I used to take 180mg ginkgo instead of the turmeric. Both function super well.
Thank you so much for all your responses ... I have some thinking to do but some of the regiments followed seem like so much time is required ... I'm not retired and am working full time (working from home for now, which is challenging) and my fatigue level is fairly high so it just doesn't feel like i would have the time nor the energy to be that focused .... but cutting my aspirin in half and using turmeric might be something i can talk to my hem about for sure. Thanks again everyone !!
You always have to discuss the use of tumeric with your doctor. Tumeric also can cause problems with effectiveness and working of meds when you use it together with other meds. Tumeric can have an opposite effect of what you want.
My son’s hematologist agreed to 81mg aspirin 4 days a week and fish oil the other 3 days. I also give him L-glutamine to heal any stomach damage.
Please consult with your consultant first.
