Antacid and aspirin interactions

Does anyone take antacids along with aspirin? Im prescribed lanzoprazole but I've had mixed information from doctors when I've asked if taking lanzoprazole will affect the efficacy of the aspirin. I'm seeing the hematologist tomorrow so I'll ask him but just thought I'd see what others have been told,

I was on both for a while with no problem - if you use enteric coated aspirin it should be absorbed after passing through the stomach anyway, so I doubt if it’s affected by Lansoprazole - but that’s only a layman’s view so see what your haem says..!

Hi, I take Omeprazole , as long as you leave a space between taking the Lanzoprazole normally twenty minutes before you eat breakfast then take your Aspirin on a full stomach, I have taken it with no problems regarding the Aspirin, was at Hospital last week and bloods are all normal, I have ET.

I take both - enteric coated aspirin and lanzoprazole and have never experienced any issues... if you're worried about anything it's always best to speak to your haem.

Yes, I've been on Omeprazole for years and on aspirin since diagnosed with P V. No problems. I'm sure my GP would have said if there was a problem.

All the best.

Hi Camelin I have been taking both since 2009 with no problems. By all means speak to your Haemo.

Best of luck

Hi Camelian,

I take clopidogrel instead of aspirin. I was told a few years ago by the pharmacist that omoperazole stops the clopidogrel from working as effectly but Lansoprazole is ok. I thought it strange as they are two drugs that do the same thing, I asked my GP, she agreed to only prescribe Lansoprazole and noted my records to that effect. I also asked my heam when I saw him and he advised that Clopidogrel is quite a strong drug and didn’t think it would be affected.

thanks for your reply my gp said she'd change me to Omoperazol instead of lanzoprazole? Another doctor said it was fine to take lanzoprazole and Aspirin?

I'll ask the hematologist at my apt later today.

Hi. I have ET and Barrett’s Oesophagus. My gastroenterologist told me to take lansoprazole before food and aspirin afterwards. Unfortunately I have had a gastric flare up and am off my aspirin at the moment which is always a worry I was on clopidrogel for a while but took a reaction to it and developed gastritis Check with your own Dr for their advice. As usual different Drs have different ideas. Let us know what you hear

Best wishes

Margo

Didn't see the hematologist today saw the nurse instead? Is this normal practice? She said it's OK to take aspirin and lanzoprazole so I'll go with the majority that it's fine. I had a long list of questions for the hematologist but managed to get most answered. Discussed the leukemia risk and was informed being jak2 + increases my risk of this slightly but reassured that it's only a small percentage that go on to develop leukemia. Outcome of my review is to remain on aspirin for now. My platelet count was 471 this is quite a big increase from where it was last time but she didn't appear concerned so I'll take her lead. I mentioned the posts I've read on here about various medications used to manage the condition and was informed they mainly prescribe hydroxycarbamide in fact she said the clinic is called the hydroxycarbamide clinic. I also asked about flying and was told I could buy some flight socks from boots if I want to- I will be reviewed 3 monthly now instead of 6 monthly which is good because I'll be reviewed twice before going away in August. The nure said they might give me an injection before going on the flight if my platelets continue to rise. I was asked if I was OK? But to be honest I'm not really sure what I should be looking out for I have the majority of symptoms mentioned on this site: headaches, sweats, fatigue. Painful legs but I'm not sure if these are related to the condition?

I have ET, male, am 75 and been on the Hydroxy for some six years. I have now stopped the Hydroxy since 4th Jan and now only take Aspirin and Slippery Elm drink at night before bed. I also use Lansoprasole as a back-up, as and when the stresses of life intervene. The Hydroxy played havoc with my nails; ingrown toenails and de-laminating finger nails plus of course the other much published side effects. My count is now around the 550's. My understanding haemo is on board with my decision and monitoring situation. It's a rocky road we tread: there is no one size fits all. The NHS loves Hydroxy as it's cheap to produce. Good luck.
