Difference of opinions

Hey everybody! Wanted to share my amusement! After the dramatic and unexpected for me drop of my platelets to 281 from 680 in just 24 days I contacted my two doctors (both professors) for the next move. One of them said to keep the same treatment i.e. 500 mg Hydro daily and check after one month. The other said to take the drug everyday except Saturday and Sunday and see what happens. Which one I am going to follow? The second one as who doesn't want a lower dose?!

My counts dropped pretty dramatically but I was definitely told to keep with the current dose on the basis it appeared to be working! I’m taking the long view on this one on the basis there are no cures and no quick fixes. (Maybe worth throwing your lot in with just one Professor?!!)

Hi Kelly, it might be a good idea to ask them both why they have given you different information on what dose to take. Maz

Maz I wouldn't dare do that as each of them doesn't know that I visited the other one just for a second opinion!! They are very arrogant I know that very well !! I will follow the second opinion as he is my doctor of 15 years and has always been very cautious regarding my treatment. I wouldn't be calm worrying that the platelets might drop too much! A consultant I saw in the hospital I went for my BMB insisted that I start Hydro 1000 mg per day! When I told her that maybe it would be better to start with a lower dose and go up she said:"no this is not how it is done". I can't imagine what would have happened if I had listened to her. In any case in one month's time I will see what happened and act accordingly. Thank you :)

My counts dropped quickly on hydrea at one 500mg daily. When they got into the 200s, the CNS said she didn’t want them to drop any lower, so advised none at the weekend.

That was over two years ago, the counts increased when I dropped the weekend dose into the 300s and have since stabilised at this level.

I don’t know what your platelets have dropped to. If they are in the high 300 then maybe drop a Ned on weekend. Or compromise and just drop 1 x
