When to take extra Hydroxy dose

Hi good people. I need to take an extra dose of Hydroxy each week. So one day a week I should take 1000mg instead of 500mg. From experience is it best to split the dose am and pm or just take two capsules together? All advice gratefully received. Many thanks.

I take one tab, in th morning and one at night, just because I started to take them both at the same time but my stomach started a riot! I also take Kefir with every dose so it now works just fine! Hope you wont have any problems!

Hi Ebot, I too take double Hydroxy at the weekends making it 1,000mg for two days. I do find it best to take the tablets apart with a meal or sandwich to protect your stomach , I have been doing it for three years and it works. Good Luck and good health. June

Current opinion seems to trend towards split doses! (OK, two responses!). Yes, I thought it might be better to spread the load. Thank you for replying.

I take 10 tabs a week and it never occurred to me to take the double dose separately. I take them after my evening meal, as I do the single dose. No apparent side-effects.

Thanks. With Judy's reply we're about even then! Well I planned to take them today so clearly I will now be taking them tonight in one dose! Thought about this a bit late in the day! Hopefully will continue with no side effects. Full on weekend ahead!

I take 2 on a Sunday and take them both at the same time. I vaguely remember about 3 years ago my heam saying it was fine to take them together.

Yes the CNS just said entirely up to me how and when I take them. Well by default I'm going to take them together tonight - which is what I intended to do until it suddenly occurred to me earlier that maybe I wasn't supposed to! Enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend.

I have to take 2 tabs on 2 days and one the other days.

I used to take both on fri and sat at same time but gave me a little tummy toilet trouble. I now take both together fri night and the other double dose together Monday night . All ok.

I take 1000mg every day and I take them both together upon waking without side effects. I was never told to take them any particular way, after food etc. I guess it depends how your system copes with it. You know yourself best. X

I take mine all to gether. 2 a day 3 Friday Saturday and Sunday. I asked pharmacist exactly the same question she said it’s ok to split them.

You must just decide on a routine that suits you.

I take HU after lunch each day. My current regime is one capsule one day and two the next. I take both capsules at the same time on the two capsule day with no problems (other than a nasty battle I had for 10 days with mouth ulcers when my dose was upped from one a day). I do find that I cope better with HU with lunch rather than at night. I think gravity must help get it through the system without it lingering too long in the tum!

Hi Ebot, I take 500 mg daily and a thousand Sat and Sun, take after my breakfast, have been doing this five years now and so far so good. I sometimes get an upset tummy, but cannot be sure if it is the Hydroxy as I have tried splitting to one in the evening after my dinner and it made no difference, so now pop them after breakfast and all is fine. Still get the occasional upset tum, but I do have to take other tablets so it could be one of them, as the side effects can also cause this problem.

Hi, Roger 41( Annemarie ) here ,on September I started on one per week, then two.

As I take a few other pills, I take my two at two pm.

I find that this means I pop pills every four hours.

This suits me.

I still need to put my feet up occasionally for an hour , but I don't mind as I am retired and my hubby is understanding.

Been for my three monthly church.

Nil of note to report.

Had a hospital overnight due to Acute left sided and I pain that caused me to vomit, had every test going including ast bloods which were not great.

Had bruises for two weeks.

But I am still here.

Thank God nothing to report like Alden problems but doctor K wants me to keep an eye on symptoms, query the clot word, not that I am alarmed or worried.

Pain is intermittent, but it has left me with a reduced appetite.

Small portions only.

So......... let's see how this goes.

I have been diagnosed with et with no add ons, since diagnosis, feel no different and tolerating all my meds. I have type two Diabetis, I drink water like,a cammel, do my exercise three times a week, walk 5k once a week and go on holidays.

I count my lucky stars that presently I have a goal to work towards my 65th birthday in December.

I want my pension.

Hope this encourages those that have been recently diagnosed that there is life after and you can be as you wish unicorn or otherwise.

Hiya, it looks like you can take your pick of when to take hydroxy. I take 10 a week, I take in the evenings, with 2 at the same time on tues, thurs and sunday. I have other meds in the morning, I've been fine, but we are all so different. good luck. Do drink loads of water.

I take hydroxy 500mg Monday-thus day and 1000mg for the other 3 days before I go to bed. Have had no problems. As I take thyroxine in the morning I wanted to ensure I split taking tablets morning and evening.

You’ve had loads of replies but just thought I’d add mine: saw my haemo yesterday and asked him about timing of taking two hydroxy pills on one day and he said it totally didn’t matter. Didn’t need to split them up, didn’t matter if with or after food. So, it appears it’s all what will work best for you!

I began taking the hydroxyurea 500mg daily for first 2 wks and Hb. crit and platelets all dropped far below normal. Too low, so had to stop it for 2 wks, then tested again. The numbers ramped up so had to begin again taking 500 mg every 3 days. Now, it's alternate days only in PM, and get tested at 2-3 wk intervals. Symptoms of itching has reduced, but about every 7-10 days a cytokine storm seems to happen causing a full blown whole body itching and hyperirritability. It can last up to an hour. I would take a benedryl for relief but now have been taking 5000mg of modified citrus pectin (powder form) which seems to work rather quickly.

I take my two tablets of Hydroxy at the weekend together at night with a drink of water and don’t have a problem.
