I've recently started taking sertraline im on day 6 today I have been so ill with side effects very disturbing intrusive images popping into my head that just dont make sense mainly when trying to fall asleep, combined with mega sweats and panic. Im sticking with it as hard as it is as i have also seen a glimmer of releif ocassionaly throughout yesterday and today. Today though I experienced what I can only describe as a crackling sensation in my head I'm wondering if anyone else has had these awful side effects and can reassure me I'm not going insane ?

sorry for your struggles didn`t take to sertraline myself one tablet was enough.I get these feelings but put it down to insomnia/anxiety you shouls call the Doc and explain your issues.

we are all different when it comes to medications in early stages, allow about five weeks for the medication to work and you get used to it. It is counterproductive to change the medication to early as the side effects will most probably just be the same. If your GP wants to see you at four weeks discuss how you are gerring on then

the medication I take been on them now for over twenty years all fine, just be patient

Hello , I would keep an eye on how you are going. Keep speaking with your doctor and if the side effects are too much you must tell them. I really suffer with side effects when I take medication so I always ask to start on the lowest dose possible and build up from there. Do you have support around you to help you get through this difficult?

I take sertraline and have done for over a year now. Once side effects settled I did see a gradual improvement and by 6 months I felt so much better. I started on 25mg, then 50mg and now I'm on 75mg. I probably could go to 100mg but I'd like to come off them one day!

Everyone reacts to medication differently, keep talking to your doctor, make sure you have support around you and rest. I know it's so hard to take this advice when your in the place that your in, but it will honestly get better. Xx

Thanks for your replies. I honestly can't bare the side effects anymore. Doctor said to just stop them yesterday but scared to take then and scared to stop them incase I'm even worse. Especially without tapering wondering if I should take 25mg instead but when I mentioned that he said no just stop them.

Listen to your Dr, there are sooo many different medications out there... it is a bit of a minefield but you have to try them to find what one works for you. Years ago I took Escitalopram and I found that a really gentle medication. I only changed because I got in a bad way last year and was convinced it was the med making me poorly but really it was my circumstances at the time!

Ask to start on a lower dose to help you get on a medication.

Whilst your finding the right medication just be kind to yourself, focus on the wins you achieve through the day e.g. getting up, brushing your teeth etc. Because they are all steps in the right direction.

I know it is so tough... it is really sh*t ! Sending you so much strength to get through this part x

I'm not functioning at all on them haven't done housework in days can barely get out of bed it's just not like me at all. I think it's safe to say this one's not for me.

Just so scared incase I don't get better and I'm back to square one as I was bad before starting these.

X

Have you spoken to your psychiatrist about this. While side effects are common in the beginning, it sounds like you are having some pretty bad ones. I would definitely seek the advice of your psychiatrist or other professional.

Hi S526 - 46 years old man in the UK here - I’ve been taking 50mg of Sertraline for just over a year. My only advice to you is keep talking to your doctor regards the side-effects and if you feel vulnerable, call 111 - they have excellent nurses available to talk to you. I’ve done it before and it really helped. I will say that I too had strange experiences in the first few weeks of Sertraline, most related to sleep disturbance and a dissociated “trippy” kind of feeling when I woke up in the middle of the night. The symptoms went quite quickly for me, but I did regularly speak to my doctor for reassurance regards side effects. Good luck and I’m happy for you that you’re on the path to wellness.

Thanks for sharing your experience. unfortunately sertraline wasn't for me doctor told me to withdraw from taking it as my side effects were too severe to cope with. Today is my first day without bit nervous incase I relapse even though I've been told I shouldn't after only taking it for 7 days. I did enjoy my first proper meal tonight in 7 days seen as though when I was on sertraline I couldn't stomach anything. Fingers crossed I get through this awful time.
