Heart palpitations

Hi, I’ve recently been given propranolol (40mg 3 times a day) for extreme heart palpitations. It’s calmed it down a little bit but I can still feel it there all day everyday and it’s still uncomfortable. Does it take a while for the propranolol to be fully effective? I can’t cope with the palpitations

Hi Flower47, I take this medication as and when but when i first started with it my palpitations were heavy and felt my whole chest and neck area/teeth were in pain..just try and wait for couple weeks and you should hopefully feel a difference..anxiety/panic attacks are the worst and I had many in last couple of months..with last week's heat they were worse and i needed to go to bed a lot as had zero energy and it was too hot to talk about it with anyone..sounds irrational i know, but last week was hell for me...am so pleased the weather is cooler and i feel more calm..hope you feel better soon🌻

Thank you for your reply! Did it take a while to feel the full effects of the propranolol for your heart palpitations? Would love for them to disappear now it’s just rapid beating 24/7. The heat definitely doesn’t help but hopefully cooler weather in on the way

Yes it does take awhile..but as others have suggested, please check in with GP or, are you near a Pharmacy? they can do a brief wellness check re blood pressure etc but they charge 7.50 - i felt unwell on going to pick up meds and asked if i cud spk to Pharmacist ..he told me ring GP back as was concerned with heart rate...when i finally got to spk to GP, he said they shouldn't be charging the public anything as pharmacies receive funding for this fromNHS..hope u have a better day 🌺

Possibly allow four or five weeks for the drug to work. I gather the palpatations are caused by Anxiety and stress.

Have you tried Controlled Breathing ?

It’s probably anxiety but it’s not the kind of palpitations attached to thought. They’re just constant all day every day, I’ve tried breathing and loads of other things to call it but nothing works

Hello Flower, personally I would get it checked out. Tests would put your mind at rest. I was born with a heart problem that did not cause many problems. I had an car accident in mytwenties and they found it again, I had a full spectrum of tests and they told me to forget about it. Now I am seventy and the problem has dissappeared or not noticed and the hole is still there. So I would get tests and put your mind at rest..

I now take my Statins etc and my bloods and pressure are very low at 126/70 approx.

It can be difficult when people have Anxiety, although that does not say you will not have health problems throughout your life that will need checkups, yes it can prove a problem however you are like everyone else and will have health problems you will need at various times throughout life
