Talking therapy

Hi everyone.

Has anyone been referred for talking therapy? Where you literally spill out your problems and the therapist just asks you questions? They don’t actually give you advice. Just listen?

Most people on this site would have possibly had talking therapy this is .

In fact today I have been told to arrange a further load of seasons for myself today

You need to be able to talk to the therapist about things you are concerned about. Treatment consists of self help.

Your first appointment will be for the therapist to talk to you and get to know you

I had my second session today and I’m just struggling with it. I’m just not sure if it’s the general therapy that isn’t right for me or if it’s the counsellor. Was hoping to get some other people’s insight and experiences on it.

Talking about mental health in safe place and frees you - all your problems addressed - maybe doctor and psychiatrist would be better?

You need to allow about four or five sessions before you suggest the therapist is not right for you. Another on can be arranged for you. The problem is therapy appointments are in short supply and you may need to wait for a new one to be offered.

However you know your needs and therapists have different techniques, like friendships everyone is different.

Try talking to your Therapist as you would to a friend in the first instance this will act as a get to know you timeout, eventually you may find you can talk after a few sessions.

Remember Sessions in the first instance can be rationed to about ten or twelve sessions

I am a great one for talking therapys, but I have never understood why someone would want to sit and talk and just be listened to..? Nor can I understand why someone would want to just sit and listen to someone pour their heart out and not offer some sort of advice..?? For me it is all about feedback and trying to get someone to point you in the right directions. To try and give you some good advice. Years ago when I was at a really low point, someone suggested that I call the Samaritans, I did this twice and can honestly say that I never came off the phone feeling better. I would have been better talking to the pattern on my wallpaper!! ( I know this sounds as though I am being cruel and horrible and maybe I was just unlucky in who I got to speak to and I do get that some people wont want to give you advice in case something happens and they end up feeling responsible.).

They say sometimes it is better speaking to a stranger but dependent on the circumstances, its better to speak to someone who does know you. A friend or a relative or your GP.

Hope you are feeling better today!!

I've been going to therapists off and on for 20 years, and they've helped a lot. I suspect they aren't just listening -- at least the good ones ask you questions that challenge negative thoughts you might have. By getting you to correct your own bad patterns and negative thinking, they are helping you to actually solve the problems yourself, which makes you far stronger than just telling you what to do. And you can probably come up with better answers for yourself than someone else can, anyway. They're really there because their experience helps them identify the ideas and feelings you have that might be hurting you.

I'd also add that their personality matters, so if after five sessions you're still not feeling it, it is totally okay to try someone else. It's even expected.

Hi there, I've been in therapist for sometime now and I can say in my circumstances they do really help. I've been suicidal many times, and taken overdoses any times, one which I was hospitalised for several days, and having my therapist who has a lot of experience and emphaty I feel I can talk about anything with her. I'm now seeing a Psychologist for 16 sessions and it's really hard to get my thoughts from negative to positive, but I'm reading the happiness trap by Russ Harris and its helping me to try and change it around. So give everything a try and fingers crossed it works for you. X

its good to talk pouring out all your problems over time will go along way to hopefully make things better for you.my last therapist was more of a listener compared to others but I didn't mind that really just as long as I was talking it made me feel much better.
