I think I need help!!!

I have a problem that I’m not really sure is serious. I have negative thoughts that make me think something is wrong with my surroundings and before I use something, I have to observe it. Sometimes I know something is mines, but my mind keeps telling me it’s not and something is wrong with it, so I end up throwing it away.

I moved to a new house a few days ago and if my eyes aren’t on things or they are separated from my things, I say they aren’t mine even if they are. I got a new toothbrush and I used it at the new house. I used the toothbrush the previous night and the next morning I wanted to use the toothbrush, I kept saying the last owner left it here and I shouldn’t use it. I try to convince myself and I talk to my brother hoping he can convince me. I want to use the toothbrush and ignore the thoughts, but I’m scared. It happens with food too and I’m wondering what’s causing it.

Hi Thatgyal,

Welcome to our supportive community. I wonder if you should have a chat with your GP and discuss your thoughts and feelings. He/she may suggest a referral to your local mental health specialist team for more input. Intrusive, negative thoughts are often a feature of MH conditions, and it is possible to nip them in the bud with appropriate support. Talking therapies e.g. CBT can help you identify these negative thought patterns that in turn lead to unhelpful behaviours. Thoughts are just thoughts. They don't have a life of their own unless we give them the power to control us. It is possible to master them by learning techniques through professional counselling, which in the UK you can access through your GP.

You need to make an appointment with your GP, this is quite a common sort of problem and they can help you come to terms with your fears and concerns

hi Thatgal

I hope you are feeling better, I do see that you have received good advice about seeing a doctor (GP) he can recommend a good therapist that can help with your situation? Do try. I not sure what helpful advice I can give you temporarily, but maybe if you can, replace your negative thought with a helpful thought.. example: toothbrush you use is ok.. snd as long as your toothbrush is in your house, you can use it.. and the food too is in your house. So you can eat it. It’s ok to use what’s in your home.. and it’s ok to be good to yourself.
