Hi everyone. I am 47 male and and have been carrying extra poundage for a long time now. I was once very fit and healthy but it seems like family life and work just prevents me making time and energy for me.
I have decided to deal with it because it's creeping up slowly and although I had managed to lose some weight back in February it has all come back quickly.
I know I need to bring exercise back into my life but seem to struggle with that.
Hope to meet some good people on here.

Probably you need motivation. Look for a good trainer. I did last week. He counselled me and now I'm motivated and every morning I do my work out in less than 45 minutes. It is not so expensive. Try!
Look for a motivating trainer, who shows passion for his work and understands your needs and your time. You can practise at home. Calisthenic exercises are very useful. And you can also buy a couple of barbells for some muscles. Crunch for the abd, push up for pectorals and triceps, squat for legs could be done at home without any equipment. And at any time. You probably have to add some cardio-exercises (do you like bicycle?). At home you can do jog on the spot, or jumping jacks. You probably need also a medical advice for diet and exercise. I repeat. Time is not an issue. Motivation is the issue. In 30-45' you can do all you need. You definitely can find half an hour FOR YOURSELF, each day. Well, a little bit of sacrifice, but is it worth doing that. Exercise makes mood better as well. If you feel more fit, you will feel more sure, and if you feel more sure, you will find more time for you. So you can do your practice. It a virtuous circle. The difficult point is the start. The body is important. It is the space where your mind lives, so the better the environment (your body), the better the state of your mind (my trainer says so, and I share his opinion). My trainer takes 25 euros for a session. But you definitely do not need the trainer each session. Maybe you can meet your trainer twice a month and it can be sufficient. And you do not need a gym. You can practise at home, or in a park etc. So it is not VERY expensive. Just be very attentive when you meet your trainer: listen to him carefully and try to remember all he says. Ask him to show you the exercises himself, then you try and he will correct you.
I have also just got an elliptical trainer which I hope to be using a lot.
My approach is to build up on the exercise incrementally. I do have a bicycle and also have a turbo trainer gadget so even in the cold and rain I can have a ride under the roof of my garage😁.
I am lucky because I have lots of muscle so hope to use that to my advantage to burn away the fat.
I have already noticed the difference but it is very early for me. I expect it will get to a point that I will not see much change despite lots of effort but the weigh in and measurements will be a great tracking system for me.
Thank you for your direct encouragement.
You might also like to know I have already spoken to a couple of personal trainers, I made a few calls on Monday, and have decide to meet a few before picking one.
I will update once I have been through that process
In my opinion swimming is probably the best option to reduce fat and build up muscle, without any stress on your joints. It is a little bit time consuming, because you have to go to the swimming pool, undress, etc etc
Elliptical trainer is very good as cardio-exercise
A turbo trainer gadget must be very amusing!
Burning fat and build up muscle mass is always a good idea: (except if you exceed as an obsessed body builder: in that case, muscle mass ends in charging too much your heart!); remember that aging involves inevitably "sarcopenia" (= muscle loss), and that maintaining muscle mass is one of the key of a good aging; I'm 54, so I must face this problem. You are younger than me, but it may be time to start thinking about it for you as well.
If you have lots of muscle, I think that's good. It should help you in your training. And you probably have less problem of maintaining mean mass. I'm very thin instead, so I think I should add some kg of muscle mass to my body (I'm 181 cm high and 69 kg heavy; I think my ideal weigh could be around 72 kg, but with less fat on the belly and more muscle in my upper body and legs!)
I advice you anyway to inform your doctor that you are beginning to train, especially if you are overweight, diabetic, hypertensive etc. He can advice you together with you trainer which exercises are more useful for your health.
If you like, let me know about your improvement. I've been training for just a few days, but I think my body is responding and my mood is better. For instance: I feel less need of coffee! And I usually get up happier because I know I have to train.
Could we exchange our e-mail? we could keep in touch and maybe show some photos of our physical improvement, of course if you like. My email is nictraverso@yahoo.it
