I was taking doxazosin but have now been changed recently to tamsulosin.

in reply to

Why were you changed @Osidge ?

I have no idea I had problems logging in to HL so now under this name

in reply to

I had been in doxazosin for some years and did not feel it was working well now. I suggested changing to tamsulosin and my urologist agreed. I will see how I go with a view to asking to replace the tamsulosin with a 5 alpha reductase inhibitor.

in reply to

I really don’t fancy the testosterone blocker.

in reply to

Probably a better choice than surgery.

I was on tamsolin and solifecine but came off both as I had adverse reactions. I am not taking any medication now

The first of those was for your BPH and the second for an overactive bladder. You may want to try a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor to see if you can reduce the size of your prostate. Not all men get side effects from it and research seems to indicate that if you do get side effects they go over time.

What adverse effects did you have Glenkerry40 ?

I was taking tamsolin and solifecine with tamsoline I only took one tablet and got chest pain which is listed as a side affect and with solifeecine got chronic constipation as I said I am not on any meds fro my enlarged prostate I only get up once during the night and still have a good sex life be it playing solo at the moment .

in reply toGlenkerry40

That’s good your symptoms are not too bad. And playing solo is going well. I tried Saw Palmetto in the past, but from what I remember I had to stop as it gave me heartburn and insomnia. Many men , however, say it helps their BPH symptoms.

Cause I’m not sure they do ! I am still waiting for my doctor to change my medication as I didn’t get on with what I was prescribed

I was on tamsulosin for years and hated the side effects then I had the UROLIFT procedure and it was a game changer. Completely off meds. I also take saw palmetto

I have had an enlarged prostate for years and have always stuck with what my urologist prescribed with one exception - I refused to have the "roto rooter" treatment sometimes called resectioning. This worked for me and I did have to persevere with medication, but at least I did not have to have the invasive treatment. The medication I am on shrinks the prostate but it also means that it is long term, no quick fixes! Yes, I still have to get up once or twice at night, but I don't have a problem with that. So this has been my experience for what it's worth. I found that vitamins simply did nothing. You may have a different experience, but I can recommend working with your urologist.

Hi John can I ask did it affect your sex life ?

JohnNicola profile image
JohnNicola in reply toGlenkerry40

The medication did not. However, the enlarged prostate and complications did. At this point, I have no sensation in my penis and cannot get even a hint of erection. The real killer to begin with was the lack of "pre-cum" and pain of minimal ejaculation.

Hi John that's a shame to not have some pleasure I would find it a real blow as I want to hang on to what sex life I have .

Yes, I grieved it too, but have adjusted and continue to enjoy my wife in lots of other ways.
