Has anyone had a Urethroplasty? How was it, and what was the outcome especially with regard to future sex?

Thank you, a very reassuring reply. I have had 4 urethotomies but strictures keep coming back. Also tried self cathetorising but kept getting infections.

Thanks. Yes was told this. Strictures are back and waiting for an appointment with Urologist then a urethogram. Not sure if connected but I get acute prostate infections every 5/6 months. Ended up hospitalised in January. Medics don't know why though.

I worry about the need to have a urethroplasty, not the operation but the fact I’ve used my cheek tissue for a previous operation (unrelated). No idea where else they could take the tissue from if I needed one :/ hour

I had one last year. I’m in my thirties as far as age factors affiliated to recovery. The recovery process was a challenge to say the least from stitches, swelling, catheter, night erections, using the bathroom etc.

Anyways, to answer your question regarding sex. When I was finally healed enough to engage in masturbation I could not ejaculate, my bladder and ejaculatory duct(vas deferens) seemingly were criss crossed and I would pee instead of ejaculating.

I had to first make sure my bladder was empty before any sexual activity and made it a weekly routine to work on ejaculating. As the months passed, things got gradually and gradually better. I personally had a period where my semen volume dropped but that too resolved over time. One year later I am now perfectly fine as I was before the surgery function wise. Sex with my female partner is identical to how it was prior to surgery.

I am scheduled to have a urethroplasty in 2 weeks and I am also in my thirties. I haven’t been able to find out how much time people take off from work. How much time did you take off? I really don’t want to take off more than a week. I don’t have a physically demanding job, but also don’t want to be wobbling around with a catheter. Also, we have three small kids 4, 2 and baby, will I be able to help out with the kids or will I be useless (if so for how long?) I am wondering if we should ask my parents to come in from out of town to help out. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, did you have the surgery? How did it go? I'm in the same situation I have a 9 month old and six year old an am bout to have the urethaplasty in a couple months.. were you able to go to work after 2 weeks if so how was it?

Yes, I actually went to work 1 week after with the catheter still in, which was kind of weird. I don’t do much walking at work and wore loose pant legs so no one could see the urine collection back at my ankle. So, it was actually fine. After 2 weeks, once the catheter was out I felt about 95% back and was picking up my kids. My parents came and stayed with us for those first 2 weeks which was a big help. I could tell when I would overdo it the next day, so I would say try to stick to the “no heavy lifting” for 6 weeks. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Many thanks, very useful.

I'm about to have my Urethroplasty (2-stage) which is due to 6th November 2020. Last week I had my Pre-Operative Assessment done so only 3 weeks left to have my surgery and I'm glad that I bumped into this forum because many of my worries and questions been answered. But I still have some questions... nobody ever mentioned after what time you are/been able to get back to work after the stage 1 surgery with your open wound still being there? And what about taking shower? Is it ok to have a shower as normal or some extra care should be taken around that open wound? Did you also have some dressing on which had to be changed by nurse or you just could do it by yourself? Was any nurse coming around to see how the healing process of your open wound (or better say of your new urethra) is getting on or you had to go back to hospital for regular check ups? Hope I will get some answer soon :-) Thank You
