HiI'm 43 and think I've been going through the perimenapause for the last 6 months. Periods erratic and heavy. I'm feeling hot. Fatigued low mood.

I had my bloods done and I have to wait 2 weeks to speak to a doctor about these!

My ferritin is 8.3ug/l which states abnormal amd the serum follicle stimulating hormone is 3.8.

My b12 is in range but lower end and folate is raised to 19.7, the top range is 19.7

I'm thinking of buying my own iron supplements as I feel rubbish and waiting 2 weeks to see a doctor.can anybody advice?

Many thanks

Download a menopause symptom checker to fill in in between now and your GP appointment to discuss with them.

I was told by the nurse I saw that the hormone tests are completely unreliable. I’m also 43 and having symptoms and my hormone levels all came back normal. She recommended I have a Merena coil (I’m currently on the depo but it’s not got enough progesterone) and start HRT.

From what I've learned through reading and studying this stuff, it seems like you need progesterone only. Heavy periods indicate low progesterone. Doctors just want to cut out all your reproductive organs (hysterectomy) to remedy the heavy bleeding. Do some research about progesterone and see if it sounds right for you. God bless you. :)

I had heavy periods but accidentally discovered fibroids when I became anaemic after a scan.

I’d probably wait until the bloods come back unless you have other symptoms. I kept feeling cold which I dismissed and kept getting thrush which I certainly didn’t make a connection with.
