Hormone advice estrogen or progesterone?

Hi...after a little advice re hormones. Lately i tend to feel really really good just after my period has finished for around a week (almost elated, very productive etc)and then It is like a light switch goes off and I feel really really bad until my next period. Tearful, anxious, reclusive etc. Where I have the two distinct differences in how I feel in the month can anyone advise whether they think I am low on one particular hormone? I am nearly 50. I tried Estrogel last winter (had Mirina coil in place then,since removed) and felt absolutely terrible on it and had to stop.
