Merina coil and menopause

I had a merina coil fitted 2 years ago because of fibroids. After a few months my periods settled and and have only had 3 lights periods in the past year. How will I know if it’s menopause or the coil causing my few periods I’m 51.

🙂There have been numerous posts re Mirena Coil. You can see links by typing Mirena Coil in the searchbox (top right). There could be a similar query.

According to The Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research, about 25% of people entering into perimenopause experience heavy periods. This is due to significant fluctuations in hormone levels.

The Mirena coil can help lighten periods in people who experience heavy bleeding. Some find that this type of coil stops their periods altogether. If this occurs, it may be harder to know when menopause has begun.

Hi Toddyboy12,

I have a mirena and I wondered the same. I had mine fitted around age 40 and pretty soon stopped having periods, so almost certainly caused by the coil and not menopause (heavy painful periods is the reason I wanted to try the coil in the first place)

It's pretty clear to me now that I'm going through menopause as I had a whole load of symptoms that are alleviated by using oestrogen.

I do wonder how I will know I'm post menopause. Currently I still feel like I'm on a hormone roller coaster though, (sometimes feel like HRT is working well, sometimes not so much) so I guess at some point (hopefully soon!) I'll feel more even and that will be a clue.

I guess the answer is that if you're thinking of trying HRT then your GP will be assuming menopause based on any symptoms you have and your age. Take a look at some websites that list symptoms such as rock my menopause, women's health concern, balance or menopause support and see if they apply to you. Having a mirena in place does make HRT much simpler as you would only add oestrogen and see if it helps.
