I am a 58 year old brain tumor survivor. When I was 13 I had surgery for an Astrocytoma tumor. 27 treatment days of radiation followed. I recovered and thought the past brain surgery was behind me. I would have scans every 5 years just to make sure. I went on to grow up, go to college, get married, give birth to two children, and work for about ten years. Then around age fifty mild headaches started. That was the start of what I have since learned are latent symptoms of the many side effects I have now as a result of the childhood radiation treatments I underwent. I had stereoscopic surgery for a meningioma six years ago. Since then I have developed seven meningiomas, have hearing loss in both ears, cognitive trouble, and the list of symptoms goes on. With the aid of an attorney I I am now on disability. I am wondering if there are others around who might have similar experiences. Thanks for reading my story.
45 year survivor of brain cancer - Meningioma Support
45 year survivor of brain cancer
I diagnosed with Atypical meningioma Grade II in May 2020. Due Intracranial pressure, I was suffering from horrible headache and epilepsy attacks. On 12th May Neurosurgeon advised for an immediate Craniotomy (Brain surgery). It was a supra-major brain surgery. The tumor was around 6cm. I suffered from a brain hemorrhage due to internal bleeding caused by major surgery. . After brain surgery and multiple seating’s of radiosurgery, I also faced the problem of drooping eyelid and blurry vision.
On Feb 2024, I was admitted to the hospital from my workplace due to sudden deafness and cognitive trouble. Due to Intracranial pressure I was going through such complications many times. Since then I had Tinnitus ( Ringing in the ears).
In Augsut 2023, MRI scan revealed that there was a recurrence of tumor along with cystic encephalomalacia and bleeding in the brain. The collective size of the same was 4.5 cm. On 27the September 2024, I went through neuro-navigation-guided keyhole surgery to aspirate blood from the brain. After aspirating blood the size of the same was 1.7 cm. I was feeling much better after the surgery.
Again after 22 days, done a CT scan due to severe headache with ear and eye pain. The report indicated that there was bleeding in the brain again and the size of the tumour along with the bleeding was more than 4 cm.
At present, I am suffering from frequent severe headaches along with frequent deafness for a few seconds and double vision for a few seconds. I frequently feel numbness in my left side.
Doctors suggested a neuro-navigation-guided keyhole surgery again to aspirate blood from the brain.
I am still working as an Associate professor/Librarian at a college. Every day is a new challenge for me to work and survive.
I also want to know if there are others around who might have similar experiences.
