Thank you for the HU event this week. It encouraged me to run 10k this morning. No need to read further!
As the first light filtered through the shutters, I knew it was my cue - get up, get out and run!
I devoured a banana, donned my gear and, as quietly as possible, unlocked the apartment and sneaked out without disturbing a soul!
A tabby cat raised an eyelid and glanced lazily at me from under a rusty car as I quickly completed a few stretches, primed my garmin and set off.
It was a slow start as I adjusted to the conditions, 17Β°, a fresh easterly breeze, and the sun still hidden behind the mountains. I didn't have a particular route in mind, just to keep going for 10k. I'd have to take it easy as I'd left my water behind and the area is more hilly than I'm used to.
A few dog walkers and early morning runners nodded their greetings as I ran along the coastal path, watching the waves break on the rocks below and observing hotel guests securing towels to sun loungers before heading off to breakfast.
I headed slowly up the hill into the village, past the queue of hikers at the bus stop, clad in walking boots and fleeces, hoping to view the almond blossom on the mountain trails.
I'm out of the village now and along a bougainville-lined path, to the steps that lead to the new coastal path. Views of the sea and cliffs open up before me as I head down the walkway, past the deceptively calm rock pools and tourists gathered to watch the waves.
The halfway point arrives, I turn and retrace my steps back through the village. I increase my pace as I enter the harbour, run past the fishermen, yachts and pleasure boats. The sun blinds me momentarily as it spills over the mountain and I turn into the shade of the harbour buildings as Garmin chimes 10k. Run complete.
