Well I made it despite overthinking for days in advance and checking the weather forecast every 5 minutes.
As the time approached it was clear the weather was going to be BAD. Cue another thing to overthink, how to dress, if you have layers where do you put your number. Will the chip be picked up if it’s underneath! Do I need a poncho!?
Despite all that I stood on the start line feeling daunted and chilly with the rain pelting down, wondering why I wasn’t still in bed warm and cozy. ( I did get a disposable poncho that I ripped off just as we started and it was great for staying dry before the off)
Off we went and I don’t know if it was because I needed to get warm or the 1st section was down hill but against my better judgement I went off fast. Soon I was warm and we were passing through the centre of York and past the Minster which is always iconic. Soon out into the countryside where some of the longer stretches needed some solid mind over matter.
Had to dig deep from 8 miles in, head down against the wind and rain, wet feet, wet all over. Funny how the miles/km get longer towards the end !
1 mile to go and I felt a renewed burst and apart from a very annoying hill to climb for the last push there was a downhill sprint finish.
It was a tough one for sure and I finished in 1 hour and 43 mins which I was more than happy with.
An additional huge bonus was when I discovered I had smashed my 5k time ( 29 mins) and 10k time ( 1hour 1min) inside the race.
Of course the wonderful feeling, the bling and a gorgeous alcohol free beer at the finish helps you to forget the bad bits.
This 10 miler was my ultimate goal for this year and it feels great to have got there.
I wonder what next years goal might be……🫣
Ps The whole event which included the Yorkshire marathon was very well organised and well supported despite the weather. Great job by all involved.
