This is probably going to go on a bit.I sat here last night making routes on Garmin and wondering how far I would need to go to do an out and back 10 miles. Turns out I have to run to Worthing, past the pier, to the end of the road and head inland a bit leave the seafront, down a side road, round a block before heading home.. I know the pier is just under 5k so I could run to the end and back if Id had enough. I could always just run to the seafront and back to add just over 3k to the Clashes. So many choices
Woke fairly early, drank tea. Pondered a bit, had a shower and got dressed, felt nice and fresh and cool, tied hair up, damp pony tail on the back of my neck. Sun factor 50 on face, arms, shoulders etc. Legs can take care of themselves.
Chose a playlist, set NRC 10k long run for this week of the HM plan. I know I can run 10k fairly comfortably and at least I'd tick that one off if nothing else.
I have a handful of wine gums in a bag tucked into the waistband of my shorts at the front and a bottle of ice cold water tucked into the waistband at the back.
Off I go, I'm very aware that the first 3k has to be under 30 minutes to count on the Clashes, so I belt off down the road way too fast. Fast for me anyway, splits for the first 3k -8.55-9.10-8.53 😃 I've done it and now on the seafront and slow down a bit.
It's hot, I'm jeffing but not really following the one minute buzz of the watch. The tide is going out, pass a few runners, walkers and cyclists, some return my cheery hello, some don't.
Getting closer to town now, more people but it's still early enough that it's not crowded.
Run past the pier, I've never run this far from home in this direction before.
And then I get to the end of the seafront road, there is a path but it's narrow and looks busy so right turn and I'm heading inland, there is a little shade from houses and a few trees, feels really cool.
I thought I should be turning about now but no! Only 7.4k so I plod on past shops round the block and then head back to the seafront.
Ooo! I'm on my way home. This is exciting, every so often I have a sip of water which is no longer ice cold but very refreshing. And a wine gum.
I cross the road and run along the seafront, now there is a lovely breeze in my face, sun on my face too, I hope I haven't sweated off all the sun cream.
The tide is further out, I can see seaweed and rock pools but I just can't resist. On to the beach I go, run along the sand, dip my hands in a rock pool and splash the back of my neck, it's bliss, I run on and through shallow water, cool feet, that doesn't last long, they just feel soggy and a couple of times hurt a bit but not much.
When I get to about the 3k from home mark I clamber up the stones, it's steep here, back onto the path and run on, I cross the road and head towards the old golf course, I need some shade now. I head past the lake and through to the cycle track where it all started just over 4 years ago, I run across the grass and through the trees, sometimes there is a path of cut grass, not today, I'm wading through knee high grass but it's ok and I feel so happy.
Back onto the road, I have just under 2k to run and two small sips of water left, I've slowed down so much now but I keep running because I want to get home.
Into the park by where I live. Garmin clicks over 16k, I run a few metres to be sure, stop the Garmin and come indoors.
Oh boy! That was hot and that was fun and I've flipping run 10 whole miles.
One rehydration tablet goes in a glass of water, one vitamin tablet goes in another glass of water, kettle on and stretch.
I can't believe I've done it and under 3 hours. 2 hrs 52 minutes 22 seconds 😃
For everyone else, run happy, I sure did today and now I'm headed to the bath.
Thank you Linda for my badge.

Coach B thought it was 10k too 🤣🤣🤣 he disappeared after 10k but I was just happy running, I had turn off points to come home on the way and wasn't sure I'd go the whole way today as it's so hot but I checked in each one but felt fine, right to the end but I did walk here and there
Wow Sola. You are truly an inspiration - 10 MILES- no wonder you are happy and you enjoyed the run too. In this heat that is amazing, even if it was early. I am taking my hat off to you and throwing it in tge sur. Here's me not even back to 5k yet and Gremlins moaning about the heat though my early morning woods trail us a buit cooler. Now, rest up for the rest of today (sone change, she says,!) and enjoy some ice cream. Well DONE. 😄🤗🥵🥳🏃♀️🍦
Same here, I'm really slow but as long as I can get out for a run a few times a week, I'm not sure why I was so determined to run so far today but I was
That's how it happens with me, I sort of planned today but had get out points where I could turn round and come home, but I felt fine so just kept going
A big congratulations to you SueAppleRun on completing your first TEN MILES run and especially when the weather was so very warm, now go and celebrate your wonderful achievement with cake or whatever you prefer ✅✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ miles👍🏃🏾
Ah, my long run on the plan was 10k but I'm a bit of a rebel, my aim now though is to keep to a steady pace for 3 & 5k runs and keep my heartrate down a bit, I better learn to run a bit slower again as I wear myself out and have to take walk breaks
Thanks Beachcomber, I've run several 10k's over the last couple of years but never had the time to run consistently around work, this retirement lark is wonderful, because not only can I take the time to run but I don't have to get up early tomorrow and go to work, My goal now is to build up consistency of pace over shorter distances and keep it slower than I started today so I don't need the walk breaks.
Today will have added strength and confidence. I did something similar on my first runs at new distances. Get the distance out of the way, then relax build from there. Being organised is good for running as well as work👍
Gosh well done 10 miles in a short space of time. You have been doing a lot of walking and running which has helped with your fitness , I do t know how you kept going. Enjoy your rest and sit with your feet up. , 👏👏😊
Incredible Sola, what an absolute superstar you are! The biggest congratulations for an epic distance. You did it! Look at that beautiful badge too; it suits you! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks 😊 I was hoping to do it this week but probably not sensible in this heat, but now I can concentrate on something else, until I get a bee in my bonnet it's time to run a HM, but I think that can wait a while
You are right as usual! That run was a great run for you and that’s what really matters.
I’ve totally reframed my long runs as mental health runs where I’m aiming to be chilled out and having a nice time so pace just doesn’t come into it. I like having long term goals where I’m aiming to go further or faster but the purpose of one of those training long runs is to get the time on my feet and the miles in my legs and the smile on mg face! That’s really helped me celebrate those slow runs.
Your running lately has just been a joy to read about. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you, I think rushing at the beginning for the Clashes made me a bit disappointed how quickly after that I slowed. I do like the longer runs though, it's where my mind isn't busy so it really is headspace 😀
And slow or slower, it's just a joy to be able to run ❤️❤️❤️
You did it, you ran 10 miles! Very well done SueAppleRun , a new distance and a new name in one day. To be running 10 miles and 3 hours in yesterday’s blasting heat is even more impressive. A new sparky badge too ✨!
Sorry, it probably wasn't my best move, posting this and then changing my name, it felt right though at the end of 10 miles.Thank you, I was pleased to be able to even with walk breaks.
Please don't apologise, it's entirely down to my taking hours to wake up and not having been on forum yesterday so rushing things!
And yes, I think marking that milestone by a name change is perfect. You're on a different road to the one you'd planned, but that doesn't mean the one already travelled doesn't count any more. 😘
Wow, just wow!! Such a milestone distance and run. You did it!!! Ten big ones and that's crazy far. Really chuffed for you Sue. A fantastic achievement you deserved ⭐🎖
This is brilliant! Well run - 10 miles in this heat 🥵. Busy week has meant even reading about running is behind schedule so I have only just seen this post. So pleased I did!!! 10 MILES!!!!
Simply wonderful. I saw your run on Strava, but to come on this forum and see a 10 mile badge next to your name is just fabulous. (When I worked out it was you!) I love your run report - you felt good and just kept going and enjoying! Well done. 👏👏🎉
I must be in the very, very slow lane! Only just seen your post of your delightful, amazing, enjoyable, including a splash in the sea and now done 10 miles. Whoopee! Very well done to you! Many congratulations!🏅🏃♀️🎉👏😊
