I don’t know how this happened, but I am honoured to be your chat host this week. I have never had the pleasure (?) of running a marathon or even a half marathon so I won’t be the source of great training advice. But I did run the 10 mile Great South Run in 2019 and 2021, and somehow I have been seduced into signing up for 2023 after standing on the sidelines cheering on my buddies last year. So I am extending my distance each week in preparation.
The Great South Run is on my doorstep, so I get to run alongside some of the route all year. Even before I discovered running myself, I would join the throngs of locals each year to cheer on the runners, come rain , come shine, come gales. I always thought that if they can run in it, I can get wrapped up in wet weather gear or whatever and cheer them on. I never considered that I would run it myself; I didn’t even think “I’d like to do that one day”. It just wasn’t on my radar. I wasn’t a runner. I didn’t think I was built for running. How things change!
I think that is why when I crossed the finish line of that first GSR, I felt incredibly emotional and burst into tears. I had just achieved something that the old me considered totally unachievable, I am sure that it will remain my most special run, even though I have run it faster since. So, which run, race or event stands out above the others for you, and why?
Also, do let us know what you are up to now. Are you training for something big? Or maybe you are trying to get off that injury couch and are busy doing physiotherapy exercises, or waiting for hospital treatment. Whether running or not, we’d still like to hear from you.
★ If you have a race coming up this month and would like a Pom Pom wave from your VRBs then check out our Events post:
Hello Dexy! I’m going to get in early for once 😂 Thank you for hosting, I bet you’ll do a fab job!
I’ve had an odd day today - I didn’t run! I decided this would probably be the last Sunday until the autumn that I’d probably be able to do so, so I did litter picking with youngest kitten instead and then bought a sock hanger for the washing line. Living life on the edge 😂
Tonight I’ve been working through the LM Improvers training plan and fitting it into a spreadsheet, working out dates etc. Turns out the first day of Amsterdam marathon training is our first full day in New Amsterdam (aka New York)! I hope jet lag doesn’t hit us too badly but it’s only an easy twenty minuter to start. I can’t wait though!!
Gentle week ahead as I’m going to take it easier before the Two Castles. Global Running Day on Wednesday though, so maybe not that easy…
After running everyday in May, it must seem quite strange to have a day off TailChaser . And what a good citizen you are, to spend it litter picking. I think when you are running in your community, you become very aware of the litter, and it does make me wonder why some people just don’t care.
I bet you are excited about the Amsterdam Marathon. You know you can do it now, but I know how much planning and work goes towards that one day. A whizz round Central Park NY before breakfast sounds a great way to start the ball rolling!
Yes, I will be out on Wednesday to get my global running badge too. It doesn’t take much to make me happy. 😂
Have a great time at the 2 Castles this weekend; sounds like a great run.
Thanks Dexy, it is a good one, but I hope the weather behaves.
Not running as much is a bit odd, you’re right, but my body definitely needed it. Back out tonight though and I did a really fun progressive run with my virtual club, listening to our fabulous playlist again 😀
Our litter picking group is fab, they’ve been going years and we really have made a difference to the area. However, it’s a bit of a battle this time of year with the picnicking tourists. What Three Words has become really useful though as you can report fly tipping to the council and pin point exactly where it is. Very handy when out on a run in the countryside!
You’re definitely getting my butterflies going talking about running in Central Park! But first, amongst all the exciting things, is Wednesday: for Global Running Day the Fordy Runners are going to be syncing their Wednesday club runs at 18:15, so we’ll be running all over the country at the same time. It’s such a good idea!
“The most difficult thing about running a marathon? Working it into every conversation for the next year”
The hilarious thing about that quote is that I do that already & I haven’t even signed up for one yet 🤣 So excited for your training TailChaser & I want to hear every detail😍
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I haven’t had any trouble mentioning that I ran the London Marathon RW 😂😂😂. There might have been another one since but I still have 4 months to go 🤣 Brilliant!
I promise you will RW, especially that first week, that’s going to be a bit special 😀
Thank you RW, this one is going to be challenge because it doesn’t mean so much. However, it’s in a different place and I’ve heard good things about it, so roll on the training- I’m starting the strength stuff tonight 😀
That’s hardly surprising with 5 boys to look after too, although there are some exercises you can do while cleaning your teeth or doing the washing up..
Just be careful of walking lunges if you do do a strength routine. I thought I had strong legs but they’ve taken since Tuesday to recover from doing those. I know it was those because they did it to me the last time I started marathon strength training, I just added weights this time for some masochistic reason!
Standing on one leg when brushing your teeth is a good one, and then progress to single leg squats once you’re happy with your balancing. One minute for each leg.
My dream is to lift twice a week as well as run but I could certainly start with balancing. I will watch out for the walking lunges. Hope your legs are recovered for park run later x
I have to be choose my company carefully though; I sometimes feel, rather than see, non running OH’s pupils disappearing into the top of her head if I overdo it.😂
Hi VRB turned ARB, how lovely that you’re our host this week. 😀
I’d normally be in bed by now, but I’m picking my daughter up from the airport and her flight from Madrid has been delayed, not arriving until about 01:15. Luckily I can have my flight radar fired up, wait for the plane to land, add 20 minutes for her to go through passport control and THEN leave for the airport!
Love the GSR and can’t wait for this year’s. I’ll second that desire for no wind. A tall order in October, but we’ve been lucky the last few years haven’t we?
But two weeks before that I’ll be running the Cardiff Half Marathon. I didn’t do a HM in 2022, but I do enjoy the challenge and hear it’s a good one - so bring it on! Training will start in earnest upon our return from hols, although of course my running shoes will be coming to Brittany.
This week I’ll be doing a speedy treadmill run and some nice bimbles. 😀
It’s a bit like Surprise, Surprise cheekychipmunks , you never know who is going to be hosting the chat next!
Living near a regional airport has definitely got its advantages in that situation, and hope all went well with your pick up.
We’ve been incredibly lucky with the GSR weather in recent years , I remember that 2018 was unseasonably hot, and 2017 with strong westerly winds, so fingers crossed for perfect conditions again for this year.
So glad that you are loving your running again and the Cardiff Half looks like a great route. You will smash it.
Hi Dexy. Flight was 2 hours late due to air traffic control (🙄) so I got to bed at 2am. 🥱
I’m not doing the 2 Castles but now you mention it, it does sound like fun. No races for me until Severn Bridge …… we need to keep everything crossed that it’s not scorching hot for that one. August Bank Holiday is a lottery, but a different kind to October. 🥵
I offered to go up and get her TC, as Mr Cheeky did it last time. I thought I had the better deal because the flight was due in at 11ish and last time was later. Air traffic control taught me not to count my chickens though! 😅 In theory she could have walked back, but there are no pavements ….. 🙄
Yes I have loads of races in August, September and October. I’d say I can’t wait, but I can because it’ll mean summer’s over!
And the jury’s still out with the Vitality. Got the hotel, but can’t decide on the race itself. Might be a race too many round that time. Are you guys going?
Still trying to decide. We really need to do our long run that weekend and there’s a 20 miler in Bedford (although 6 laps of a circuit doesn’t fill me with inspiration) and then there are the university drop offs. Too many variables at the moment tbh.
Jury is still out with us too cheekychipmunks . We’ve bought our discounted entries, and think we may stay in Surrey and travel up on the day if we do run it. The hotel is still reserved though just in case. Hopefully it will be back to May next year, and the gang can get together again.
So good to see you hosting. I’m an aspirational long distance runner & still hang out here as I feel welcome.
I’m travelling this month so probably will only have time for 5k’s. I had signed up for a HM badge on Strava & a 15k badge on Garmin but I might need to let that go even though that doesn’t sit well with me 🤣
Hello RunWillie , what beautiful runs you must have along the west coast with the sun setting over the ocean.
Sometimes our running has to step back for all the other things going on in our lives, but who thought we’d ever say I’ll just run a few 5ks when we started this journey. Make sure you are running on Wednesday to catch the Global Running Day badge instead.
I now very rarely just run 5k apart from Park run but still remember when that felt like an impossibility. Forever thankful for C25K & this forum who inspire me to keep chasing those running dreams ❤️🏃♀️
2 badges on one run? Are you setting the Garmin challenges? I haven’t ever done that, but I do love it when Mr Garmin gives a badge just because I ran on a certain day.
The Global running day badge was just awarded but I had signed up for the 15k. I always sign up for the Garmin challenges to give me a little encouragement. I was looping around the block to get that badge. So silly 🤣
I have no idea how I ended up here! 🙈 I'm 59 next week (celebrating in our traditional way by enjoying a week in Padstow) and had decided I would launch myself into my 60s by running a HM this year and a FM next year to mark the big one. It was a close contest between this and hiding under the duvet but decided as age has brought me many joys, including rediscovering running and riding my lovely pony, it should be celebrated So somehow managed to get a ballot place for the GNR and the official training plan starts on the Camel Trail next week 😁 😳
I also put my name in the hat for the London marathon but assuming I don't get a place, I'm torn between finding another 'big' event or going for a local friendly one 🤔
Pretty nervous about it tbh but....one foot in front of the other and keep going, right? 😬
You are here because you are a runner Jackapoodle , and you have probably run more than 10k. 😂😂 Yes us late starters are still surprised by this fact. The great thing about starting in your 60s is that you generally have a bit more time to enjoy your running.
Well done on gaining your place at the GNR. What a great incentive to work towards a Half Marathon. Starting your training on the lovely Camel Trail while on holiday sounds a great idea.
Although, I have stopped at 10 miles, there is so much friendly advice on this forum for anyone wanting to run further. Good luck to you.
Thank you 😊 my goal is primarily to survive 😆 anything under 3 hours I'll be happy with but I guess I'll have a better idea as I run for longer distances.
Sadly only in Cornwall for the week so will be doing most of my training on the rather flatter terrain of N Lincs. Looking for different routes though as I think I need the variety as I run further. I don't think that running long distances like HM and FM will become a regular thing for me but we'll see 🙂
sounds marvellous! 🤗. You can ride your pony to recce new routes 🥰. I used to borrow my neighbour’s dog 🐕🙂
I declared to myself I’d run a marathon on my 60th birthday. Once I’d actually done it 🏅I declared I’d run a marathon on subsequent birthdays. This birthday will be my 7th marathon, if I pull it off 😀🏃♀️
Oh wow, this is amazing 👏👏 and slightly terrifying😱😀 I now remember that when I started C25K I set myself the final goal of a 10K. Oh heck, it's a slippery slope!! 😆
Good luck with your marathon, I'm sure you'll smash it!!
The pony is never to be trusted in finding new routes. Her only criteria is that they are lined with juicy hedges!! 🙈🐴🌿
I think most of us have fallen over that slippery slope here Jackapoodle. I never expected to go further than 10k. It took every bit of me to do a HM. I think it was actually easier to train for the FM as I put my heart and soul into it - once you find your ‘why?’ it’s not so bad.
oh wow, an ultra????!!!! The thought of a marathon scares me, although I guess 6 months ago so did the thought of doing a HM and I did back in April, hmmmmmmmm, maybe one day!🙂
the good thing is there is no pressure to do anything 😀. It’s got to be fun. Once I’d done some half marathons I had to have a crack at the marathon, then another one to prove the first one wasn’t a fluke 😁
Hi Dexy and thank you for stepping in to host the chat this week. I still remember you from that time I ran at the Southsea Parkrun where you were volunteering at the westerly turn I think it was. I have lots of great memories from my park running days and I’m tempted to try one again soon. Just for fun this time of course. I don’t have any particular one that stands out for me but there are many that I look back on with fondness.
I’m currently recovering from a bad dose of that ‘orrible covid as you know. I finally tested negative Saturday night and again yesterday morning which meant I could get back out there. I did try a gentle 5k on Saturday i think it was and it was ok but my heart rate was crazy. I jeffed it in 40 minutes. 3 run 1 walk.
Yesterday I went back to the gym and did a gentle session just to test my self and it went well, but I am about 20-30% down on all round strength I think. I’ll just take my time and ease back into it. Listen to my body and do what it says this time. I’ll get back but for now any races I do will be for training/experience only. I’m still aiming for those U.K. champs in September 👍
Hey Brian, yes turning cone marshal , shaking my tambourine is one of my favourite volunteer roles. But now UpTheStanley is an RD, he likes to place me in the more vital roles, and last time it was funnel manager - that was scary!
I’m glad to hear you are Covid negative again and hope the weariness doesn’t go on too long.
Do you do longer slow runs as part of your training, or it all track and gym work?
You’ll have plenty of time for that gold medal at the UK champs, and we’ll all be rooting for you.
Thank you, Dexy. I only run short distances in training. I’ve run one 5k earlier this year and this was the second one. I think I’ll do more of these really slow jeffing runs as they are just good fun.
I forgot to mention that after my gym yesterday I can hardly move today for DOMS. I’ve never had it this bad. Ouchy. 😓
That’s ok TC. I caught covid from the gym on the 18th May and I suffered. Had quite a few days in bed with zero energy. Just trying to restart the old engine at the moment.
What a nice surprise Dexy5. Good to have our Commander in Chief in control this morning! Sorry to be late on duty; I am trying to compose this response and stir porridge at the same time!
Long run day today; how far ? 🤷♂️ ..not HM for sure, but otherwise, I will see where CB takes me. Ok, grub up …catch you later 🙂
Hi Dexy5 and cheekychipmunks (assuming I am not addressing cheeky’s alien alter ego of course)…. my Klingon isn’t very good I am afraid….
I have done a bit of research on bated breath. It comes from the Merchant of Venice apparently ..short for abated, or holding breath with excitement (thank you internet!). I guess Shake-and-run would have known that 🙂.
I don’t know what to think about this morning’s effort. I ran another 10 miles, but the time was little different to last week’s effort at a few seconds over 2 hours. I ran the hills this time, and my heart rate was in the red zone for only 13% of the time versus 18% last week, so progress of a sort. I need to do more intervals and maybe shed a pound or four! I can (or maybe could) do 7 mins per k over 10 miles….but I am not going to stress over it. The next week (“5 weeks to go”) bit of NRCHM plan reduces the distance and focuses on pace; timely. A happy ending though. I rang Mrs BC from the cafe, so she and Molly joined me for a hot lunch…sausage day for Molly of course. I am amazed that I am still awake! 🙂
yes I was definitely waiting with excitement BC but luckily I didn’t hold my breath until you replied. 😂
No wonder you are tired after 10 miles, but it must have been lovely in the forest. The icing on the cake was to be met by Mrs BC and Molly for lunch at your cafe. Does that mean you don’t have to get off the sofa and walk her again? I’d love to shed a stone too, but at least it’s going in the right direction oz by oz.
Molly is enjoying a rest too. One problem is that our daily walk(which includes Mrs BC usually these days) goes past the cafe…so I am suffering from too much chocolate! Just not possible to get Molly to walk past all those cuddles and treats (the cafe owners hand out dog biscuits!). More resolve required!! 72 kilos is my ideal weight…at 74 at present. That’s it ….I am going to shift it over the next month!
You’re doing brilliant BC, all those miles in the bag! Just thinking about Klingon and hills, what a great combination - the perfect language to shout out loud to get yourself up them! With the added bonus that everyone coming in the opposite direction will do everything to get out of your way!!
Mornin all. Still not about much as OH is still crook. He had another X-ray t’other day and is currently in physio as I type. He’s going to the sauna afterwards leaving me free to go out and play 🤗🏃♀️
Hello Dexy and everyone, and thank you for hosting Dexy. What a great question 🙂
How fabulous to have that route on your doorstep. Do you find yourself thinking that everyone else is on “your” turf during the GSR? I know I feel like that when I’ve run a race at the arboretum. I just want everyone else to go away 😂
I have so many memories of runs and races that it’s difficult to pick one. I have two particularly special runs, the first one being my first HM. It took me four years of setbacks and injuries to get from 18K to the HM distance and when I finally did it, on my own, I was so tired that I didn't feel much at all 😂 It was only afterwards that I started to appreciate that I’d finally done it.
The second one was a 10 mile race pace run in training. Everything aligned on the day and I thought I’d just try to run at race pace as far as I could to see how I got on. It turned out much better than I expected and when I stopped and checked my time I burst into tears!
It’s funny how we get emotional on some runs. I always feel teary standing at the start line for a race and feel closely connected to all the other runners there, each person with a story of how and why they are there.
Anyway, I’m waffling again 🙄
My running is going ok, I’m still only doing short runs and I’m seeing the physio again this week for the Piriformis, but luckily it doesn’t bother me when I run.
The weather is glorious, my garden is blooming (village Open Gardens this weekend 🙀) and life is good.
Oh no, I love having everyone here to enjoy my patch Irishprincess , and instead of having to weave around pedestrians, dogs and children on the prom, we get to run on closed roads. There is a real buzz in the city and I love meeting up with my running buddies, and spotting our parkrunners along the route. I can imagine you feel the way you do about the arboretum because people are on paths that you are used to enjoying in peace and tranquility.
It must have been wonderful to complete that first HM after so many obstacles and delays. I hope you celebrated well once it had sunk in.
I’m glad it’s not just me who has had a cry at the end of a run. And by the way waffling is what this post is all about so waffle to your heart’s content!
Good luck with the physio and your piriformis, and Have fun with the open garden’s weekend. Does that entail lots of cake baking too, or do you just get to eat them?
Good morning Dexy,Nice to see you hosting on here. It's good to hear that your GSR training is going to plan.
I've only taken part in 2 races, a 10k and 10 miles. My best event though was a virtual HM which I ran solo on my 60th birthday. I was so pleased because I also raised over £600 for Shelter. I luxuriated in a hot bath afterwards and decided that being 60 wasn't so bad!
I'm doing the Port Sunlight 10k on Sunday. It starts at 11am, so it's going to be pretty warm and I'll take it steady.
I've been out and this morning and run over 7 miles with some friends who are all much faster than me. Their chatty pace is more like my tempo pace, so I do struggle to keep up. It's a great start to the week though.
I'll probably swim tomorrow, do some yoga and a run on the beach and a short run locally before Sunday.
Your favourite run certainly doesn’t have to be a race and running a Half Marathon on your 60th birthday is amazing. What a way to mark the occasion, and a perfect excuse for celebrating and eating lots of cake. A great fundraiser for Shelter too. It was in my 60th year that I started c25k, so you were a bit ahead of me.
Having done a 7k today, some short tapering runs sound perfect for your race at Port Sunlight. Keep up the water intake this week, it sounds like this lovely weather is to continue. I haven’t braved going into the sea yet.
Thanks Dexy. I read the chat most weeks, but generally run out of time to make any comment. I thought I'd start early this week! Best wishes as you continue your training x
10 miles is still my favourite distance and it was lovely reading your story building up to completing the run...and the emotion after.
My greatest satisfaction is completing 5 Marathons; they are tough and each has been different. I ran 4 by myself and that gave me the grit and determination to know I can push myself through alone. Running the last one in Manchester was so different as the crowds, noise and participants were all new on the day itself. To achieve this distance has been far beyond my expectations.
Tasha and I are still running together and this week we have the famous Blaydon Race on Friday and the Hardmoors White Horse Half Marathon on Sunday. Looking forward to both. Take care everyone 😊
It’s my pleasure GTFC, and so lovely to hear about everyone’s favourite runs. It’s great that 10 mile is your favourite distance- I feel as though I really have to work hard to get to 10 miles, and it takes me a long time to run it. 10k doesn’t take quite so much out of me so I get to enjoy it. The answer of course is to run longer distances more often, like you do. 5 marathons, wow.
Yes the first real race is so amazing, with the atmosphere, the music, and the support as you go round. Not to mention bragging T-shirts and medals.
Good luck to you and Tasha99 with your runs at the weekend. So lovely that you found each other on the forum. 🥰 💕
Hardmoors races are aptly named. I entered one, but had to withdraw in advance through injury! I was relieved. The local Marathon and Half involve scaling Roseberry Topping….tough going even for the very fit. I have long coveted a Hardmoors shirt ….but I would have to earn it for it to mean anything! Never going to happen 🙂
My stand out race was last year’s GSR. Nothing to do with run really, although I was delighted with the weighty medal. Meeting up with so many VRBs for the first time, some by design and some by chance, was a heart warming experience. Everyone was every bit as nice and full of fun as I anticipated. My best running experience ever.🙂
Hi Dexy5 - great to see you hosting this and what a lovely, inspiring post too! I did wonder if you were building up that distance in anticipation of another GSR!👍🙂
Funny how events stay in our heads (and hearts) isn’t it? Hard to pick a favourite (I do ❤️ the GSR ), although I think for me it would probably be the Bath Half I ran with my sister a few years ago. We kept each other going all the way round (she is the reason I PB’d!) and crossed the finish line together! That’s quite unusual for me as I tend to prefer to run ‘on my own’ (amidst the thousands!😂)
Still running 10/11k most weekends with a couple of 5ks during the week.
Is there another HM in me at some point? I hope so but will aim for a 10 miler again first. The important thing for me is just getting out there as it definitely helps me manage my anxiety and mental wellbeing.🙂
Oh yes Sandraj39 , I watched last year but I found that standing all that time searching for familiar faces was harder than running it, not to mention the FOMO! The reunion was lovely and I found myself signing up for the early bird entry.
Oh I can imagine running a race with your sister would be amazing, and I’ve heard the Bath Half is a great run, although I think it’s had a few problems since Covid. I can’t convince my sister to try c25k, despite the difference it has made to my health and wellbeing.
I am sure you’ve got another HM in you, but keep running those 10ks until you are ready.
Hey Dexy and all VRBs! (Great hosting BTW!) My favourite race is coming up Sunday ,and this will be my 7th year of running it.
The day of the race in 2016,we were dressed and ready to leave the house for our 1st attempt at Needles HM when we got the call that my mum had sadly passed away 😢and she was the best most lovely lady😪forever missed. 💔
Later that year me and my brother ran the route and part way round my sister and dad had walked to Tennyson monument to meet us and we had a drink to mum with the sun setting in the distance (then ran down the hill for last few miles fuelled by lager and mum's favourite Frys chocolate bar)
Paul had arranged for us to still get our race medals and tshirts,it was an emotional one! So this is definitely the one for me ,I'll just take my time and enjoy the views! Xxx
Now that one has brought a tear to my eye aliboo70 . What a way for you and your family to celebrate the life of your Mum, and such a beautiful place to do it. I can imagine it is a time of reflection every year when you take part.
Hi Dexy. Thanks for hosting. My stand out run has to be my first half marathon event; crossing the finish line to find my son had waited for me. That was one emotional hug for sure! Then again, my last half event was pretty amazing too; special VRBs and beating my son's HM time (from that first ever one).
Then there are all those other runs that are special for different reasons - notably the first one back after 5 months off with a stress fracture ... running does that, keeps giving best runs ... 🙏🥰
The thing is, the longer you run, the harder it is to choose that special one. However, I would agree that you were so super happy to have beaten your son’s HM time at the Monsal Trail HM, it has to be up there.
Nice to see you have an extra job alongside all that token sorting. Not sure I can contemplate the idea of training for anything right now, but doing what I can when I can is better than the alternative. Happy hosting.
You are doing brilliantly getting out for exercise when you can Coddfish . You looked so happy walking at parkrun last week with your walking poles.
So which of your runs to date has been special? It must be difficult to choose a favourite parkrun, as you have an impressive international tally, in addition to the UK runs
My most memorable runs were probably when training for the GSR. 12k on an out and back from Hassop Station on the Monsal Trail, so I went both ways through 3 tunnels. 12k or so in a single direction on the Regents Canal from Kings Cross to Kensal Green. Oban to Ganavan Sands including some of the Ganavan Sands parkrun (not done the parkrun as not there on a Saturday).
Most memorable parkrun - Futakotamagawa in Tokyo. The excitement of it being RWC 2019 final day (sadly England lost). Rugby supporters from all over the world and the astonishing efforts the locals had made to recover enough ground to make a course following the destruction wreaked by a typhoon only 3 weeks earlier.
I can certainly relate to your 12k run on the Monsal Trail. Such a lovely place to run. And that extra 2k gave you 3 tunnels, on 10k we only got to turn around in the first one. Oban and London, very different but also memorable.
I remember your Tokyo parkrun, how brilliant that was with all those rugby fans heading out in the same train.
Thank you for hosting this week. I read that you plan to take part in the GSR, no wonder your running features longer runs. All the very best for happy, enjoyable and injury free running to you. Last Sunday, I started my warm up walk and continued my run listening Joan Benoit Samuelson, thank you for the recommendation. I have a feeling that my mind was wondering around, but I still enjoyed it. What a runner! I look forward to hearing how you found Run with Lopez.
I just may be fit enough to run the Duffield 5, our local hilly run held during carnival week here. (June 19th) Ran it and so enjoyed it in 2019, Covid 2020 and my fall, injured both 2021 and 2022. It was the only event other than 2 park runs that I have taken part in since my running journey began. I get butterflies even thinking about it!I have a count down sticker chart on my kitchen door! I continue to leave out intervals, but have introduced some tempo runs. I find it hard to pitch my pace, but came to the conclusion that about effort 6 is all I am allowed as the higher intensity efforts invariably cause me problems. Perhaps on day...
Hello Over61, I have not done a long run this week as I’ve been on a little girly getaway in Dorset, so Lopez is waiting in the wings for me. I’m glad you enjoyed the Joanie chat.
It will be lovely for you to do that 5k run again , especially if it’s in your own community, and 5k of hills sounds very achievable for you. Running without incurring injury is definitely your priority.
I hope that your girly getaway in Dorset was really good. The 5 in the Duffield 5 is a rough 5 miles my watch gave 8.34km and 171m elevation gain. My amount of races seems seriously pathetic compared to yours!
I am completing you 'funny lady' warm up or a warm up inspired by it, so thank you for that. 😊
thanks for joining us Cmoi . Yes life has to butt in every now and then and reduce the running, so maybe the storms are well timed. The weather has been so strange with us having all the sunshine and mainland Europe suffering the rainstorms and floods. Your trails are above and beyond anything this prom plodder can do.
Hell Dexy! Just realised I haven't been on for ages so thought I'd catch up today and comment on your post on the last day of it!!! My most memorable run was the HU half in 2021 - I was new to racing, it was lock down so none available otherwise and I just loved the camarardarie and company from HU even though we were all running on our own. I picked a beautiful route and just enjoyed it all. Then of course it has led to some actual real races with the company of VRB's from here which has been really lovely 🙂
you are never too late to join in the chat Cowladyrunning . Oh those virtual runs were so important to us when we couldn’t do proper races weren’t they, and our admins put in so much of their time into setting them up with commentary and playlists for the run and a finishers list at the end.
Glad to hear that you then progressed to running with others. It’s not for everyone, but I get a buzz from it.
As I round up the chat this week, I would like to say what a pleasure it was to join you all this week.
I would also like to say a big thank you to all those who give their time on a much more regular basis to keep these forums running for everyone else . It is not just chatting like we have been doing but also making sure that the correct advice is given and that posts follow the guidelines laid down by HU. So if any of you are reading this, I say thank you, because I certainly couldn’t dedicate the time to do what you do for us.
